A classic example from Waterman’s golden age, this #56 has been carefully restored while preserving the character, materials, and details that make these early Waterman pens so appealing to collectors. It is now in excellent working and writing condition.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe restoration was performed with particular care to preserve the integrity of the hard rubber. The nib, black feed, and section were ultrasonically cleaned, while the interior of the barrel and cap were hand-cleaned with mineral oil. The exterior of the cap and barrel was carefully cleaned, buffed, and polished to bring out the depth and warmth of the Red Woodgrain pattern. The old rubber sac was replaced with a new latex sac, and the 18K gold-filled cap band, Waterman Ideal clip, lever box assembly, and 14K gold nib were hand polished.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Red Woodgrain Hard Rubber is particularly attractive, displaying a rich and consistent combination of red and black throughout both the cap and barrel. The pattern has excellent visual depth and remains remarkably well preserved for a fountain pen approaching a century in age. The lever is clean and attractive, with no significant wear to the arm or globe area. The Waterman Ideal clip retains excellent overall condition, with only a touch of wear along the right and left edges; the ball of the clip remains exceptionally clean. The gold-filled cap band is also in excellent condition and has been polished to a bright, even finish.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe barrel retains exceptionally clear Waterman imprints, including the central imprint reading, “WATERMAN'S REG. U.S. IDEAL GLOBE PAT. OFF. FOUNTAIN PEN.” The model designation “56” is crisply stamped at the end of the barrel. The threads are excellent, with the cap engaging securely and precisely. There are no cracks, chips, repairs, monograms, or personalizations to either the cap or barrel.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMeasuring approximately 5 5\/8 inches capped and 7 inches posted, and weighing approximately 0.73 ounces, the Waterman #56 has the substantial yet comfortable proportions expected of one of Waterman’s larger and more prestigious writing instruments of the period.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe lever-filling mechanism has been thoroughly cleaned, serviced, and lightly oiled. It has been tested with water and operates flawlessly, filling and expelling as originally designed.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAt the heart of this Waterman is its #6 14K Manifold nib, Made in the USA. The tipping is in excellent condition and measures approximately 0.73 mm at the point. Despite measuring in the Medium range at the tip, the writing characteristics produce a fine, controlled line measuring approximately 0.45–0.57 mm in the supplied writing sample. As expected of a Manifold nib, it is intentionally firm and offers very little flex, but it writes with impressive smoothness and consistency. The writing sample shown was produced using the actual pen offered here, with the nib dipped into Faber-Castell Cobalt Blue ink.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Waterman #56 is an important model for collectors, and examples in the Red Woodgrain pattern are considerably less frequently encountered than the more familiar Red Ripple finishes.
