Here is a beautiful example, in my opinion, of a Wearever Pioneer Fountain Pen in Red Marble Celluloid.
This fountain pen features a David Kahn two-piece NIB that measures .70mm when using digital calipers. This example measures 5” inches when capped and 6” inches when posted. This particular Wearever Fountain Pen is known as Model 191P.
The clip is gold plated, the cap band has a two-tone design with the center of the banding displaying a gold plate design with the upper and lower portion in a stainless or nickel plate. The lever would have been gold fill when original and shows very little of it today.
This fountain pen model, Pioneer, was a higher priced Wearever that featured a lever filling mechanism (as compared to a button filler).
David Kahn, a Jewish immigrant, set out to offer pens to those that couldn’t afford the other higher priced pens made by the likes of Parker and Sheaffer in the industry. The Pioneer model is where Kahn introduced a two-piece NIB that consisted of a small 14K NIB (center) held or secured to a larger stainless steel frame (U.S. Patent No: 1,989,220)
There are two version of this type of pen with a clip that is stamped with a DK Logo
and the name Pioneer. This example is from the Wearever line due to the stamping of Wearever and Pioneer. This Wearever Pioneer Fountain has been restored to original condition. The NIB, Section and Barrel have been disassembled and cleaned. The cap and barrel were micromesh hand sanded starting with 1500 grit and ending with 12,000 grit. Lastly, the entire pen was hand waxed and polished to give this fabulous pen a bright shine.
Wearever Fountain Pens are typically a higher-level third tier manufacturer. The celluloid material displayed on this fountain pen, red marble, displays wonderfully and certainly would be a tasteful addition to any collection.
