Description

For your consideration, we are offering for sale this Gorgeous Restored 1917 Waterman #514 Black Hard Rubber with 14K Solid Gold Smooth Overlay Eyedropper Fountain Pen. This fountain pen has been thoroughly taken apart, cleaned and put back together and now is in wonderful writing condition.

Ultrasonically cleaned the NIB, feed, and section. Hand cleaned the inside of the barrel and cap with mineral oil. Cleaned, buffed, and polished the outside of the cap and barrel. Hand polished the 14K Solid Gold Waterman Clip-Cap Clip, 14K Cap, and 14K Barrel along with the Waterman 14K #4 NIB.

This fountain pen is made from black hard rubber with 14K Solid Gold (not plated) Overlay with is a smooth overlay. We can determine the date of the fountain pen by the 1917 date on the cartouche area engraving. The Waterman Ideal Clip-Cap displays absolutely no wear and is marked 14K. All of the 14K Solid Gold overlay and trim is in excellent condition with no denting and has been polished to shine brightly. The cap, barrel, and clip have all been stamped with 14K. This Waterman 514 barrel has the crisp and clean imprint on the end of the barrel, "514". This cap is a slip type cap that securely fits when placed on the barrel. There is a banner engraved on the barrel with initials that reads, "O.H.S. '17.". There are no cracks or repairs to the hard rubber. At the top of the cap is an old separation from wear or handling usage. The area is secure and minor in size measures .77mm in height and 6.39mm wide - a jeweler could weld this back together and make it look new again. This Waterman #514 measures 5 1/4" in length capped and 6 1/2" posted.

This Waterman Fountain Pen is an Eyedropper Fill type. The section unscrews and one fills the barrel with ink and attached the section back to the barrel for use. It is a simple designed filling system and works as it should with ink.

This Waterman has a smooth #4 WATERMAN New York IDEAL Semi-Flex Stub Nib that is a pleasure to write with. The iridium tipping is in excellent condition with the point measuring 1.12mm when measured with digital calipers - a broad nib point. When writing the sample in the listing images, the NIB writes with a fine line measuring roughly .54mm on the horizontal strokes and will flex up to a double broad stroke of 1.70mm with medium to firm pressure when measured with digital calipers. The writing sample provided was done with the actual pen in the images that are listed for sale. The writing sample was used by dipping the NIB in Parker Quink Blue Ink.

Any specks of white in the images are from the cotton that I used to clean the barrel and cap.

This 1917 Waterman #514 14K Solid Gold Fountain Pen is not an easy example to find. I would consider the condition of this fountain pen to grade in Fine to Very Fine condition. This is a Collector and Writer's dream pen in terms of condition and how smooth it writes. This Waterman #514 Fountain Pen is in ready to write condition or add it to your writing arsenal collection.
