Description

For your consideration, we are offering for sale this early Circa 1920s Waterman #16 Black Chased Hard Rubber Fountain Pen with Flexible Nib. This fountain pen has been thoroughly taken apart, cleaned and put back together and now is in wonderful writing condition.

I have ultrasonically cleaned the NIB and feed. Hand cleaned the inside of the barrel, cap, and section with mineral oil. Cleaned the outside of the cap and barrel with mineral oil. The hard rubber displays some oxidation with some browning of the hard rubber material. The chasing is stronger on the cap than the barrel and the barrel is more black than the cap.

This fountain pen is made from black chased hard rubber. The barrel has a fair imprint at the center that read, "PAT'D 1884 MAY 23 1899 WATERMAN'S FOUNTAIN PEN N.Y. U.S.A. PAT'D MAY 23, 1899 & AUG 3, 1903 U.S.A". The butt end of the fountain pen has a very crisp 16 PSF imprint. The cap is a screw-on type cap always securing tightly with a Nickel Plated IDEAL CLIP-CAP Clip. The barrel has the Nickel plated Lever and Lever Box Assembly in excellent condition. There are no monograms or personalizations to either the cap or the barrel. There are no cracks, nicks or repairs to the hard rubber. This Waterman #16 measures 5 5/8" in length capped and 7 1/8" posted.

The NIB is an awesome flexible and super smooth Waterman 14K New York IDEAL #6. The actual tip of the Waterman 14K NIB measures .77mm with digital calipers. When writing the sample in the listing images, the NIB writes with a fine line measuring .55mm and flexes up to a triple broad+ stroke of 2.11mm with medium pressure. The writing sample provided was done with the actual pen in the images that are listed for sale. The writing sample was used by dipping the NIB in Parker Quink Blue Ink. I cannot emphasize enough the fact this Nib writes incredibly smooth and a great degree of flexibility.

Any specks of white in the images are from the cotton that I used to clean the barrel and cap.

I would say this Waterman 16 P.S.F. is in Very Fine to Excellent condition. It's a little lightened (oxidized) in color from exposure to sunlight. Very smooth and shiny, so you don't see much of the chasing. It is ready to write or just add to your writing arsenal collection.
