Description

For your consideration we are offering for sale this Restored 1920s Waterman 452 Hard Rubber Fountain Pen with Sterling Silver Hand Engraved Vine Overlay. This fountain pen has been thoroughly taken apart, cleaned, put back together, and is now in wonderful writing condition.

I have ultrasonically cleaned the NIB, feed, and section. Hand-cleaned the inside of the barrel and cap with mineral oil. Replaced the old rubber sac with a new, properly sized, sac. Hand polished the Sterling Waterman Ideal Cap & Clip, Barrel, and Ideal Lever Box Assembly along with the Waterman Ideal #2 semi-flex nib.

This fountain pen is made from black hard rubber with Sterling Silver Overlay which is known as the "hand engraved vine" pattern. The overlay is one if the highly desirable overlays that are coveted by Waterman collectors today. The cap and barrel overlay are stamped with "WATERMAN'S STERLING MADE IN USA". The IDEAL clip is marked "STERLING" as well. The barrel end has a weak, almost illegible imprint that reads, "WATERMAN'S REG U.S. PAT. OFF. MADE IN USA". The butt end of the fountain pen has a very worn 452 imprint.

The threads on the cap and barrel are excellent with the cap always securing tightly to the barrel. There are no monograms or personalizations on the barrel where the cartouche is. There are no cracks, nicks, or repairs to the hard rubber. The sterling overlay is great, with some light scratching around the middle portion of the cap that is commensurate with the age of the pen. There is a tiny scratch just under the top rivet on the clip - I just point it out for clarity sake and probably due to having a Sterling Silver replacement clip. This Waterman 452 measures 5 1/4" in length capped and 6 5/8" posted. The lever and box assembly has been cleaned and oiled. It works flawlessly and smoothly. The Globe and Ideal imprint on the lever shows some light wear.

The NIB is a 14K #2 Waterman Ideal semi-flew nib. When measuring the actual tip of the 14K Ideal NIB, it measures at .45mm with digital calipers or an extra fine to a fine point. When writing the sample in the listing images, the NIB writes with an extra fine/ fine line measuring roughly .42mm with light pressure and will flex to a double broad stroke of 1.58mm with medium to firm pressure when measuring with digital calipers. The writing sample provided was done with the actual pen in the images that are listed for sale. I have tested the filling mechanism with water and fills wonderfully. The writing sample was used by dipping the NIB in Montblanc Blue Ink.

Hand Engraved Vine Pattern Waterman Fountain Pens are very tough to acquire today. This one is in very Fine condition and is in ready-to-write condition. It is certainly a collector-grade fountain pen. A superb writing instrument to add to your writing arsenal collection!
