Description

For your consideration we are offering for sale this Restored 1920s Waterman 452 Hard Rubber Fountain Pen with Sterling Silver Overlay. This fountain pen has been thoroughly taken apart, cleaned and put back together and now is in wonderful writing condition.

Ultrasonically cleaned the NIB, feed and section. Hand cleaned the inside of the barrel and cap with mineral oil. Replaced the old rubber sac with a new, properly size, #16 rubber sac. Hand polished the Sterling Waterman Ideal Cap & Clip, Barrel and Ideal Lever Box Assembly along with the Ideal 14K #2 NIB.

This fountain pen is made from black hard rubber with Sterling Silver Overlay. The sterling silver overlay is known as a basket weave pattern. The hard rubber portion of the pen displays a deep, classy black color. The barrel end has a crisp imprint that reads, "WATERMAN'S REG U.S. PAT. OFF. MADE IN USA". The butt end of the fountain pen has a clear 452 imprint.

The threads on the cap and barrel are excellent with the cap always securing tightly to the barrel. There are no monograms or personalizations on the barrel with the cartouche area that has been left untouched. There are no cracks, nicks or repairs to the hard rubber. The sterling overlay looks beautiful, with some light scratching that commensurates with the age of the pen. The cap has a bit more scratching by the clip area than the rest of the pen, but I would consider it normal wear for the age of the pen. This Waterman 452 measures 5 3/8" in length capped and 6 5/8" posted. The lever and box assembly has been cleaned and oiled. It works flawlessly and smoothly. The Globe and Ideal imprint on the lever is crisp and clean.

The NIB is a 14K #2 Ideal Waterman NIB. It writes great, a wonderful NIB to write with. When measuring the actual tip of the 14K Ideal NIB, it measured at .73mm with digital calipers. When writing the sample in the listing images, the NIB writes with an extra fine line measuring roughly .38mm with very light pressure and flexes up to triple broad stroke of approximately 1.89mm+ with firm to medium pressure, I didn't want to overextend the NIB's capabilities. The writing sample provided was done with the actual pen in the images that is listed for sale. I have tested the filling mechanism with water and fills wonderfully. The writing sample was used by dipping the NIB in Parker Quink Blue - Black Ink.

Any specks of white in the images are from the cotton that I used to clean the barrel and cap.

This is an wonderful antique Waterman's 452 Fountain Pen that is in ready to write condition using the lovely flexible NIB. I would grade this Waterman 452 in very fine to excellent condition. A superb writing instrument to add to your writing arsenal collection!
