Description

For your consideration, we are offering for sale this Restored 1920s Waterman 55 Red Ripple Hard Rubber Fountain Pen with Gold Filled Trim. This fountain pen has been thoroughly taken apart, cleaned, and put back together and now is in wonderful writing condition.

I have ultrasonically cleaned the NIB, feed, and section. Hand cleaned the inside of the barrel and cap with mineral oil. Replaced the old rubber sac with a new rubber sac. Hand polished the Gold Filled Waterman's Dome, Cap Banding, Ideal Clip-Cap Clip, Gold Filled Ideal Lever Box Assembly along with the Ideal 14K #5 NIB. The 18K Gold Filled Trim is all in excellent condition - the gold-filled dome display very minor wear, the clip displays no wear, the cap banding displays very minor wear on a couple of place on the top edging, and the lever box assembly is free from any wear - all the 18K gold-filled trim has been polished brightly.

This fountain pen is made from ebonite in the red ripple design. The cap and barrel display a vibrant red and black color that is consistent on both the cap and barrel. The fountain barrel has a clean and crisp imprint at the center of the barrel that reads, "WATERMAN'S REG US IDEAL GLOBE LOGO PAT. OFF. FOUNTAIN PEN.". The butt end of the fountain pen has the 55 imprint.

The threads on the cap and barrel are excellent with the cap always securing tightly. The cap has the uncommon 18K Gold Filled Dome on top of the cap. There are no monograms or personalizations on the cap or barrel. There are no cracks, nicks, or repairs to the hard rubber. This Waterman 55 measures 5 5/8" in length capped and 7" posted.

The lever and box assembly has been cleaned and oiled. I have tested the filling mechanism with water and fills wonderfully. It works as it was designed to - sucks up water without an issue in my testing.

This Waterman has very flexible Waterman Ideal #5 - 14K NIB. When measuring the actual tip of the 14K #2 Ideal NIB it measures with a broad point at .91mm when measuring with digital calipers. When writing the sample in the listing images, the NIB writes with an extra-fine line measuring roughly .43mm with very light pressure and flexes up to a triple broad stroke 2.04mm with medium to firm pressure. This Waterman #5 nib writes very smoothly, such a pleasure to write with! The writing sample provided was done with the actual pen in the images that are listed for sale. The writing sample was used by dipping the NIB in Parker Quink Blue-Black Ink.

Any specks of white in the images are from the cotton that I used to clean the barrel and cap.

This Waterman's 55 Red Ripple Fountain Pen is in "ready to write" condition using the great flexible NIB. This fountain pen has the uncommon 18K Gold Filled Dome that is considered a desirable collector variant. I would consider the condition of this fountain pen to be in excellent+ condition. Certainly, a wonderful writing instrument to add to any writing arsenal collection.
