Description

For your consideration, we are offering for sale this Restored 1920s Waterman #56 Wood Grain Hard Rubber Fountain Pen. This fountain pen has been thoroughly taken apart, cleaned and put back together and now is in wonderful writing condition.

Ultrasonically cleaned the NIB, feed, and section. Hand cleaned the inside of the barrel and cap with mineral oil. Cleaned, buffed, and polished the outside of the cap and barrel. Replaced the old rubber sac with a new rubber sac. Hand polished the 18K Gold Filled Cap Banding, Gold Filled Waterman Clip-Cap Clip, Gold Filled Lever Box Assembly along with the Waterman 14K #6 MANIFOLD NIB.

This fountain pen is made from hard rubber in the Wood Grain pattern. The coloring is gorgeous displaying consistent red and black coloring. The Red Ripple pattern matching perfectly. The lever is crisp and clean with no wear. The Waterman Ideal Clip-Cap displays a touch of wear at the high point on the ball of the clip. The gold-filled cap banding is starting to show a hint of wear along the very top edge of the banding - overall the 18K gold-filled trim is in very good condition and polished to shine bright. The barrel has a very clean imprint at the center of the barrel that is light and reads, "WATERMAN'S REG US IDEAL GLOBE PAT OFF FOUNTAIN PEN". The butt end of the fountain pen has a crisp number "56" imprint. The threads on the cap and barrel are excellent with the cap always securing tightly to the barrel. There are no monograms or personalization to either the cap or barrel. The only challenge with this Waterman #56 is there is a #12mm hairline just above the top of the clip. The hairline never made it under the clip so the clip is solid and does not move - the hairline is cosmetic and if it wasn't on the cap this pen would grade in Excellent condition. This Waterman #56 measures 5 5/8" in length capped and 7" posted.

The lever and box assembly has been cleaned and oiled. I have tested the lever filling systems with water and works flawlessly and as it was originally intended to.

This Waterman has #6 Manifold Nib Made in the USA. The iridium tipping is in excellent condition with the point measuring .66mm when measured with digital calipers - a medium nib. When writing the sample in the listing images, the NIB writes with a medium line measuring roughly .67mm to .79mm when measured with digital calipers. The nib is rigid but writes very smoothly. The writing sample provided was done with the actual pen in the images that are listed for sale. The writing sample was used by dipping the NIB in Parker Quink Blue Ink.

Any specks of white in the images are from the cotton that I used to clean the barrel and cap.

This antique Waterman #56 Red Ripple Fountain Pen is in ready to write condition. I would consider the condition of this fountain pen to grade in fine condition due to the hairline in the cap just above the clip otherwise it would be excellent condition. This Waterman #56 Red Ripple Fountain Pen would be a wonderful addition to your writing arsenal collection.
