Description

For your consideration we are offering for sale this Exceptional Restored 1920s Waterman 58 Black Chased Hard Rubber Fountain Pen with Nickel-plated Trim. This fountain pen has been thoroughly taken apart, cleaned and put back together and now is in wonderful writing condition. Collector Alert: Not too many times have I been able to find a hard rubber Waterman 58 as clean as this. It is the cleanest Waterman 58 black chased hard rubber fountain pen that I have ever handled - it will be hard to find one better.

Ultrasonically cleaned the NIB, feed, and section. Hand cleaned the inside of the barrel and cap with mineral oil. Replaced the old rubber sac with a new rubber sac. Hand polished the Nickel Plated Waterman's Clip, Nickel Plated Cap Banding, Ideal Lever Box Assembly along with the Ideal 14K #8 NIB. The Clip, Cap Banding, and lever box display no wear and have been polished to a high shine. This fountain pen is made from hard rubber in the black chased design. The color is a deep black and the chasing is clean and crisp - even throughout the cap and barrel. The barrel imprint is the cleanest I have ever seen and reads, "WATERMAN'S REG. U.S. IDEAL GLOBE LOGO PAT. OFF. FOUNTAIN PEN". The buttend of the barrel has a clean "58" imprint.

The threads on the cap and barrel are excellent with the cap always securing tightly. There are no monograms or personalizations on the cap or barrel. There are no cracks, nicks or repairs to the hard rubber. This Waterman 58 measures 6 1/8" inches capped and 7 7/8" inches posted

The lever and box assembly has been cleaned and oiled. I have tested the filling mechanism with water and fills wonderfully. It works as it was designed to - sucks up water without an issue in my testing.

This Waterman has the New York Ideal Made in USA #8 - 14K NIB. The NIB has a fabulous smooth writing experience along with having some wonderful flexibly. When measuring the actual tip of the 14K #8 Ideal NIB, it measured at .84mm with digital calipers. When writing the sample in the listing images, the NIB writes with a fine line measuring roughly .45mm with very light pressure and flexes up to a triple broad stroke 1.85mm with normal to medium pressure. Again, I really want to emphasize the #8 Nib writes very smoothly. The writing sample provided was done with the actual pen in the images that are listed for sale. The writing sample was used by dipping the NIB in Parker Quink Blue-Black Ink.

Any specks of white in the images are from the cotton that I used to clean the barrel and cap.

This Waterman 58 looks to have been "frozen in time" because it is so clean, chasing is clean and crisp, and imprint displays no wear. I would consider the condition of this fountain in Excellent+ to Near Mint condition. This Waterman #58 is the largest fountain pen they made in this 1920s era. This Waterman #58 is collector grade and would be a fine addition to any writing arsenal collection.
