Description

For your consideration, we are offering for sale this Restored 1920s Waterman 452 Hard Rubber Fountain Pen with Sterling Silver Overlay. This fountain pen has been thoroughly taken apart, cleaned and put back together and now is in wonderful writing condition.

Ultrasonically cleaned the NIB, feed, and section. Hand cleaned the inside of the barrel and cap with mineral oil. Replaced the old rubber sac with a new rubber sac. Hand polished the Sterling Waterman Ideal Cap & Clip, Barrel and Ideal Lever Box Assembly along with the Ideal 14K #2 Flexible NIB.

This fountain pen is made from black hard rubber with Sterling Silver Overlay. The sterling silver overlay is known as the Gothic pattern. The hard rubber portion of the pen displays a deep, classy black color. The cap and barrel are stamped with, "WATERMAN'S STERLING MADE IN U.S.A.". The butt end of the fountain pen has the 452 imprint.

The threads on the cap and barrel are excellent with the cap always securing tightly. There are no monograms or personalizations on the barrel and there is a cartouche area that has been left untouched. There are no cracks, nicks or repairs to the hard rubber. The sterling overlay looks beautiful that displays normal use wear and scratching - I point out for clarity sake that on the backside of the cap are 5 very small pinpoint dings and I photographed it in image 8. This Waterman 452 measures 5 3/8" in length capped and 6 5/8" posted.

The lever and box assembly has been cleaned and oiled. I have tested the filling mechanism with water and fills wonderfully. The Globe and Ideal imprint on the lever display little wear.

The NIB is a 14K #2 Flexible Ideal Waterman NIB. This Nib is extremely fun to write with and provides the user with an exceptional writing experience. When measuring the actual tip of the 14K Ideal NIB, it measured at a medium point of .72mm when measured with digital calipers. When writing the sample in the listing images, the NIB writes with an Extra Fine/Fine line measuring roughly .42mm on the horizontal strokes and flexes up to triple broad stroke of approximately 1.81mm with a medium to firm pressure. The writing sample provided was done with the actual pen in the images that are listed for sale. The writing sample was used by dipping the NIB in Parker Quink Blue-Black Ink.

Any specks of white in the images are from the cotton that I used to clean the barrel and cap.

This is a great, antique Waterman's 452 Fountain Pen that is in ready to write condition using this incredible fully flexible NIB. I would grade this Waterman 452 in Fine to Very Fine Condition and is a collector grade Waterman. A superb writing instrument to add to your writing arsenal collection!
