Description

For your consideration, we are offering for sale this Restored Circa 1930s Canadian Closeout Waterman 52 Red Ripple Hard Rubber Fountain Pen with 18K Gold Filled Trim. This fountain pen has been thoroughly taken apart, cleaned and put back together and now is in wonderful writing condition. This Waterman 52V has vibrant coloring with bright, clean trim on the cap.

Ultrasonically cleaned the NIB, feed, and section. Hand cleaned the inside of the barrel and cap. Cleaned, Buffed, and Polished the outside of the cap and barrel to bring back the vibrancy and to protect the hard rubber. Replaced the old rubber sac with a new, Silicone sac. Hand polished the 18K Gold Filled Clip, Cap Banding, and Lever Box assembly along with the Flexible Waterman Ideal 14K #2 NIB. The lever does display wear on the arm of the lever and the globe imprint. The Waterman Clip and Cap Banding have been polished and display no wear with bright clean trim. This Waterman 52 measures 5 3/8" in length capped and 6 3/4" posted.

The threads on the cap and barrel are excellent with the cap always securing tightly to the barrel. This fountain pen is made of hard rubber in the pattern known as Red Ripple. The coloring displays consistent and vibrant red and black coloring. There are no monograms or personalizations to either the cap or the barrel. There are no cracks, nicks or repairs to the hard rubber. The barrel has a very faint imprint at the center of the barrel that reads, "PATENTED AUG. 9, 1906 FEB. 9, 1909 WATERMAN'S FOUNTAIN PEN IDEAL GLOBE LOGO MADE IN CANADA ". The butt end of the fountain pen has the 52 imprint.

The lever and box assembly have been cleaned and oiled. In my tests with water, the filling system works flawlessly.

This is the fun part - this Waterman 14K Ideal Nib is made in Canada and is a #2 that has great flexibility all while writing smoothly. When measuring the actual tip of the 14K Ideal #2 NIB, it measures with a medium point of .61mm with digital calipers. When writing the sample in the listing images, the NIB writes with a fine line measuring roughly .51mm with very light pressure on the horizontal strokes and flexes up to a triple broad of 2.13mm with medium to firm pressure; I didn't want to overextend the NIB's capabilities. The Nib is a pleasure to write with and does so smoothly. The writing sample provided was done with the actual pen in the images that are listed for sale. The writing sample was used by dipping the NIB in Parker Quink Blue-Black Ink.

Any specks of white in the images are from the cotton that I used to clean the barrel and cap.

I would have to express this Waterman 52 Red Ripple color is spectacularly vibrant. This Waterman's 52 Fountain Pen has most likely a closeout that made produced in the mid to late 1930s. This fountain pen is in ready to write condition. I would consider the condition of this fountain in Very Fine to Excellent condition only due the lear on the lever arm and faint imprint otherwise you are looking at an Excellent+ example. Certainly, a collector grade writing instrument to add to one's writing arsenal collection.
