Description

For your consideration, we are offering for sale this Restored Circa Late 1920s to Early 1930s Waterman 54 Hard Rubber Fountain Pen with 18K Gold Filled "ROYALPLATE" Overlay in the Sheraton Pattern. This fountain pen has been thoroughly taken apart, cleaned and put back together and now is in wonderful writing condition.

Ultrasonically cleaned the NIB, feed, and section. Hand cleaned the inside of the barrel and cap with mineral oil. Replaced the old rubber sac with a new sac. Hand polished the Waterman Ideal Cap & Clip, Barrel, and Ideal Lever Box Assembly along with the Ideal 14K #4 Flexible NIB.

This fountain pen is made from black hard rubber with Gold Filled Overlay. The overlay is known as the Sheraton pattern found on many European Model Fountain Pen The hard rubber portion of the pen displays a deep black color with no oxidation. The Cap banding is stamped with, "H in Diamond - this is the Spanish Importer/Agent Mark for Egon Hassinger, WATERMAN'S IDEAL GLOBE LOGO ROYALPLATE". The end of the barrel has the crisp imprint that reads, "WATERMAN'S REG. US. PAT. OFF. MADE IN USA". The butt end of the fountain pen has the 54 model imprint. This particular pen was made from the European Market. The H in the Diamond hallmark is an Importer/Agent mark for Egon Hassinger. He acquired a license from Waterman to produce ink and the assembly of Waterman Fountain Pens for the European Market. Hassinger was registered in Barcelona, Spain from 1915 to 1948 where he lived.

The threads on the cap and barrel are excellent with the cap always securing tightly. There are no monograms or personalizations on the barrel and the cartouche area that has been left untouched. There are no cracks, nicks or repairs to the hard rubber. The Gold Filled overlay looks beautiful that displays much less than normal use wear and scratching. There are no dings or dents - the Overlay is very heavy compared to U.S.A. overlays that I have seen. This Waterman 54 measures 5 3/8" in length capped and 6 7/8" posted.

The lever and box assembly has been cleaned and oiled. I have tested the filling mechanism with water and fills wonderfully. The Globe and Ideal imprint on the lever displays no wear and in perfect condition.

The NIB is a New York 14K #4 Flexible Ideal Waterman NIB. When measuring the actual tip of the 14K Ideal NIB, it measured at a broad point of 1.08mm when measured with digital calipers. When writing the sample in the listing images, the NIB writes with a fine line on the horizontal strokes measuring roughly .49mm and flexes up to triple broad stroke of approximately 2.14mm with a medium to firm pressure. This nib writes very smoothly and is very responsive - it is a great nib that I very much enjoyed writing with. The writing sample provided was done with the actual pen in the images that are listed for sale. The writing sample was used by dipping the NIB in Parker Quink Blue-Black Ink.

Any specks of white in the images are from the cotton that I used to clean the barrel and cap.

This is a great Waterman 54 with 18K Gold Filled Sheraton Overlay Fountain Pen that is in ready to write condition. These Spanish import Waterman pens don't show up very often and this one is in magnificent condition. I would grade this Waterman 54 to be easily in Excellent Condition and is a collector grade Waterman. A superb writing instrument to add to your writing arsenal collection!
