For your consideration, we are delighted to offer this exceptional circa 1972 Parker 61 Insignia Fountain Pen and Ballpoint Pen Set, distinguished by its elegant 1/10 12CT Rolled Gold Caps featuring the distinctive six-line repeating pattern. The fountain pen is fitted with a 14K gold Medium nib, and both writing instruments are preserved in remarkable Mint, New Old Stock, and Never Inked condition. Finding a Parker 61 Insignia set in such extraordinary original preservation is an increasingly difficult proposition, making this a particularly desirable offering for the discerning Parker collector.
Introduced in England/United Kingdom in 1966, the Parker 61 Insignia, also associated referred to as Jet Flighter and Signet, featured an attractive rolled gold cap with a repeating six-line pattern that complemented the model's unmistakably streamlined profile. By 1969, Parker had discontinued the original capillary-filling system in favor of the more conventional cartridge/converter arrangement. This later configuration offered greater convenience while retaining the elegant styling and distinctive character that made the Parker 61 one of Parker's most recognizable designs. Production of the Insignia continued until approximately 1972.
This outstanding example features the later cartridge/converter filling system and retains the classic Parker 61 silhouette, streamlined profile, and distinctive inlaid arrow design. The black hood and rolled gold components are exceptionally well preserved, exhibiting no chips, cracks, dents, dings, visible wear, or evidence of repairs. The 1/10 12CT Rolled Gold surfaces remain bright and lustrous, while the engraved six-line repeating pattern retains excellent definition. The cap lips retain their original factory markings, including “PARKER Made in England” and the Parker logo on the fountain pen, while the ballpoint pen is additionally marked “1/10 12CT R.G. and 61.” Neither instrument displays monograms, personal engravings, or other personalization. The fountain pen's slip cap engages securely, and the ballpoint's click mechanism operates properly.
The fountain pen measures approximately 5 3/8 inches capped and 5 5/8 inches posted, with an overall weight of approximately 0.83 ounces. The ballpoint measures approximately 5 1/8 inches in length and weighs approximately 0.58 ounces. Together, these well-proportioned instruments exemplify the refined styling and comfortable handling for which the Parker 61 is so highly regarded.
The fountain pen is fitted with a superb 14K gold Medium nib measuring approximately .75 mm, as measured with digital calipers. Remarkably, the nib and filling system remain completely uninked. This pen was acquired from a collection of more than 150 Parker 61 fountain pens reportedly preserved in never-inked condition. Following careful inspection and flushing, no evidence of previous inking was found. Given its exceptional preservation, I elected to leave this particular example untouched rather than introduce ink, preserving the opportunity for its next owner to decide whether it should remain an immaculate collector's piece or experience its first fill of ink.
The cartridge/converter filling system offers practical versatility for a pen of this era. The included Parker converter has been tested with water and functions properly, and the fountain pen is also compatible with standard Parker ink cartridges. The ballpoint pen is supplied with a new blue ink refill, allowing it to be put into service immediately. An original Parker 61 presentation box accompanies the set, completing an attractive and highly collectible presentation.
Although the Parker 61 Insignia is itself a desirable variation, examples equipped with the later cartridge/converter filling system are particularly appealing to collectors seeking the convenience of this configuration. Discovering a matching fountain pen and ballpoint set preserved in Mint, New Old Stock condition, with the fountain pen genuinely never inked and the original presentation box included, represents an especially compelling opportunity.
This is a truly outstanding Parker 61 Insignia set, combining the understated elegance of its six-line rolled gold cap, the practicality of the later filling system, a superb 14K gold Medium nib, and exceptional original preservation. An impressive and distinguished addition to any serious Parker or vintage fountain pen collection.
