Description

For your consideration, we are offering for sale this restored Near Mint Circa 1934 Conklin Nozac-type (just no imprint of Nozac) Golden Pearl "brick" pattern celluloid Fountain Pen. This fountain pen has been thoroughly taken apart, cleaned, and put back together and now is in wonderful writing condition.

NOTE from PenHero: Conklin introduced its first faceted Nozac pen, later called the Pen Line, circa 1934. The pen cap and barrel are found with fourteen facets, no Word Gauge, and a plain single wide cap band with a bead on each edge. The plastic cap and barrel are made from a laminate that has great depth, and straight lines alternating plain and patterned bands. The upper half of the barrel is windowed so the ink level can be seen. The twist-fill cap on faceted pens usually matches the plastic of the body of the pen. By the time this pen was produced, Conklin had streamlined the clip, now engraved "Conklin".

I have ultrasonically cleaned the NIB, feed, and section. Hand-cleaned the inside and outside of the cap and barrel. Hand-polished the Gold-Filled Conklin Rocker Clip, Cap Banding, and 14K Conklin NIB. The Conklin Rocker Clip does not display any wear and has been polished to a bright gold-filled color. The gold-filled cap banding displays no wear and has been polished to shine brightly. I have cleaned, buffed, and polished the barrel and cap to bring back the vibrancy of the fountain pen and to protect the celluloid. This Conklin Nozac is a Standard size model that measures 5 1/4" capped and 6" posted.

The fountain pen cap and barrel are in excellent condition with no chips or repairs with the cap always securing tightly to the barrel. The cap and barrel have amazing, vibrant golden brown and black coloring with no darkening. The barrel transparency is water clear like the day it left the factory. The faceted barrel and cap have 14 sides - this is not the 12-sided type. The barrel is stamped with, "THE CONKLIN PEN CO TOLEDO OHIO. U.S.A. REG. U.S. PAT. OFF." There are no monograms or personalizations to either the cap or barrel.

Installed are new rubber o-rings that replaced the broken down and deteriorated original cork seal. The pen has been disassembled, cleaned, and inspected for any defects before reassembling. The piston filling system is now working as it was originally intended to. I have tested the filling mechanism with water and it fills and empties as it was originally designed to. Lastly, the end of the piston knob has the imprints of "FILL" and "EMPTY" clearly marked.

The 14K Conklin NIB has a medium point measuring roughly .60mm when measured with digital calipers. In the writing sample provided, the nib writes with a fine line measuring roughly .58mm light pressure and will flex to a broad line which measures roughly 1.17mm with firm pressure when measured with digital calipers. The writing sample in this listing was completed with the actual pen in the images that are listed for sale. The writing sample was used by dipping the NIB in Montblanc Blue Ink.

This Conklin Fountain Pen is an extremely clean pen in Near Mint condition which makes it a very difficult model to find. I would consider this Conklin to grade in Near Mint Condition. The imprints are strong, the color is vibrant, working piston-filling mechanism, with no wear gold filled trim - everything a collector wants in this type of model. I would consider this a collector-grade Conklin that should be cherished in a deserving collection.
