Description

For your consideration, we are offering for sale this Circa 2007 Danitrio Kara-Nuri Flat Top (Purple on Purple) Ebonite Fountain Pen fitted with an 18K Medium Nib. This Danitrio Fountain Pen was never inked until I dipped the fountain pen to create a writing sample. The fountain pen is in Mint condition and has a smooth writing nib.

Kara-nuri is one of the distinguished styles of Tsugaru-nuri, a traditional lacquer art that originated in Aomori Prefecture of Japan. Characterized by its distinctive pattern of amorphous speckles—often in a contrasting color scattered across the surface—Kara-nuri creates a striking and textured visual effect. The origins of Tsugaru-nuri trace back to the Edo Period, when artisans sought to develop a lacquerware style that would embody nobility, prestige, and opulence. What began as a decorative art for household objects evolved into a revered craft, now showcased in fine writing instruments such as this. The Nuri work is completed by a single craftsman, which is why the pen does not bear an individual signature.

This Danitrio Flat Top model comes with a gold plate clip with "DANITRIO" stamped. The process of urushi lacquer takes anywhere from 2 to 6 months to complete. The pen is in Mint condition with no nicks, cracks, scratches, or repairs. The design is of urushi purple on purple abstracts on top of a black ebonite. The cap is always securing to the barrel tightly via threads. This Danitrio Fountain Pen measures 5 3/4" capped, 7" inches posted, has a diameter of 17.92mm around the cap lip area, and weighs 1.20 ounces.

The Danitrio Fountain Pen comes fitted with an 18K - #6 Medium Nib. The point measures at .87mm, or a medium point, when measured with digital calipers. When writing with this nib, it performs by writing with a smooth line ranging from Medium to Double Broad. The nib will range from a medium (.75mm) line to a double broad (1.56mm) line variation. It is just a fabulous writing nib, I can't emphasize enough how smoothly this nib writes! Often referred to by Danitrio collectors as the “fireball nib,” the design features an image of Kaen-Kōhai—a flame-shaped halo associated with Fudō Myōō (Acala), the "God of Fire."

The filling system is via an Ink Converter. I tested it with water, and it works as it was designed to.

This Danitrio Fountain Pen comes with a black lacquered wooden box and a description card. This Purple Kara-nuri had only 417 pieces made worldwide.

This Danitrio Fountain Pen is individually handmade and takes roughly 2 to 6 months to complete. This particular design is no longer made in the current production and is extremely difficult to source as a Flat Top. I would consider this one in Mint Condition. This Danitrio is a spectacular Japanese writing instrument and a rare piece to add to one's writing arsenal collection.
