For your consideration, we are pleased to offer for sale this 2011 Montblanc Patron of the Art – Gaius Maecenas Fountain Pen, Limited Edition number 4507 of only 4,810 pieces produced worldwide. This example is brand new, never inked, and preserved exactly as it left Montblanc, complete with the original presentation boxes, outer shipping sleeve, plastic pen sleeve the pen originally came in, literature, and documentation—a true New Old Stock offering.
The Gaius Maecenas is one of the most classically inspired entries in Montblanc’s Patron of the Art series, with its design language drawn directly from ancient Rome. The sterling silver (925) cap is the visual and thematic centerpiece, engraved in traditional Roman style with the opening lines of a poem by Horace dedicated to Maecenas, a literary homage befitting Rome’s great patron of the arts. Above the inscription, laurel wreath motifs—symbols of honor and imperial distinction—encircle the cap near the crown, while the lower edge is engraved with “Gaius Cilnius Maecenas.” The Montblanc white star crowns the cap, completing the classical composition. The clip is shaped like a Roman sword, a subtle yet powerful detail that immediately signals the pen’s historical inspiration.
The barrel is crafted from white marbled lacquer, designed to evoke the fluted columns of Roman temples. Its softly polished surface is smooth in hand, with gentle marbling that adds depth without overpowering the form. Completing the narrative, the sterling silver piston blind cap is decorated with a Roman pattern and engraved with a portrait of Maecenas modeled after an ancient Roman coin, along with the inscription “Gaius Maecenas – MMXI,” anchoring the pen firmly to its 2011 release. The fountain pen measures 5 1/2 inches capped, the pen does not post, and it weighs 3.25 ounces.
Condition is exactly what one hopes for in a top-tier Montblanc collectible. The pen shows no chips, cracks, dings, dents, or wear of any kind. The cap threads smoothly and seats securely. The piston-filling mechanism operates cleanly and smoothly and has been tested with water only, functioning as intended.
The pen is fitted with an 18K gold Medium nib, rhodium-plated to harmonize with the sterling silver trim. The iridium tipping measures .86mm when measured with digital calipers. The nib is richly engraved with laurels, the Montblanc “4810,” “MMXI,” the Montblanc “M,” and “18K / 750.” As expected from Montblanc’s Patron of the Art series, the nib is beautifully finished and promises the refined, controlled writing experience for which these pens are known. It has never been dipped or inked, remaining factory-fresh for the next collector or owner.
Included are the inner and outer Montblanc presentation boxes, original shipping sleeve, and all accompanying literature, all in excellent condition. The overall presentation is flawless and complete.
The Montblanc Patron of the Art Gaius Maecenas is widely regarded as one of the most elegant and historically grounded releases in the series. It represents a compelling blend of classical scholarship, sculptural design, and Montblanc’s highest level of craftsmanship. Increasingly difficult to find in unused, complete condition, this example stands as an exceptional opportunity for the serious Montblanc collector or for those who appreciate history translated into a truly refined writing instrument.
