Description

For your consideration, we are offering for sale this service scarce Circa 1918 Mabie Todd SWAN Black Chased Hard Rubber Military Safety Ink-tablet Eyedropper Fountain Pen in restored condition. This fountain pen has been thoroughly taken apart, cleaned, put back together, and now is in wonderful writing condition.

Ultrasonically cleaned the section and feed. I have cleaned and polished the cap and barrel. The Nickel clip has been polished and displays no wear.

This fountain pen is made from black chased hard rubber that displays a deep black color with fabulous chasing. The cap has the uncommon screw-on type cap always securing tightly to the barrel. There are no monograms or personalizations on the barrel. The left side of the clip displays a less than 1mm crack in the clip where the flat upper portion of the clip and the hump part of the clip meet (see image 7). The pen has several clean imprints - the barrel imprint reads, "SWAN SAFETY PEN MABIE TODD & CO NEW YORK SWAN LOGO TRADE PAT. JAN. 26, '94 (see image 10)". The top of the cap has the "SCREW CAP TIGHTLY" imprint (see image 8). The lower end of the barrel reads, "MILITARY PAT. APPLIED FOR" imprint (see image 9). This Mabie Todd Swan measures 5 3/4" in length capped and 6 7/8" posted - it is a very long pen.

This fountain pen has a 14CT Extra Fine Made in New York #2 nib. The actual tip of the Mabie Todd 14K NIB measures .39mm with digital calipers. When writing the sample in the listing images, the NIB writes with an extra-fine to fine line measuring between .36mm and .46mm under normal writing pressure  The writing sample provided was done with the actual pen in the images listed for sale. The writing sample was used by dipping the NIB in Montblanc Blue Ink.

This Swan fountain pen is a Military Safety "Trench" Eyedropper Fountain Pen. It uses ink tablets mixed with water to create ink. The idea was military personnel could use the pen to write letters to home while in the field with just an ink tablet and some water. The ink tablets are inserted into the screw end of the barrel (see image 6).

This is a scarce example of a Mabie Todd Swan Military Safety Fountain Pen in in excellent condition. These "trench" fountain pens are extremely scarce to find and collectors clamor for them when the chance comes up.  A spectacular writing instrument to add to your writing arsenal collection!
