Description

For your consideration, we are offering for sale this magnificent 1996 Visconti Taj Mahal Limited Edition #874 of 888 Fountain Pen fitted with the 18k Medium Nib. This Visconti comes with the original wooden box, Visconti Taj Mahal literature/documentation, and a black leather pen case. This fountain pen is pre-owned and the condition shows the care and limited use that was given to this pen as it is Mint.

The Visconti "Taj Mahal" is a fountain pen made of vegetable resin covered with a very particular silver filigree, made entirely by hand and made with Indian filigree techniques. The fountain pen was made with a limited edition of 888 pieces. The designs are inspired by the wonderful inlaid marbles of the famous mausoleum. The structure of the pen features a stylized profile of the dome of the Taj Mahal at the ends of the cap and barrel. The fountain pen uses the High Vacuum Power Filler to fill the barrel with ink.

This fountain pen is in mint condition with a clean cap, barrel, and spectacular wire silver overlay made completely by hand. The fountain pen was never made with a clip and the pen does not post. The limited edition number is engraved on the end of the "Power Filler" with 874.

The cap and barrel are in perfect condition with no cracks, nicks, scratches, or repairs. The cap secures to the barrel every time. The wire silver filigree is perfect with no damage. This fountain pen measures 6" capped, measures 18.68mm in diameter around the cap banding, and weighs 2.11 ounces.

This Visconti uses the patented "High Vacuum Power Filling" system. I tested it with water and fills as it was designed.

The Taj Mahal comes with a smooth writing 18K gold 2-tone medium nib. The nib is marked Visconti with an 18K/750 M. The nib has a medium point measuring .81mm when using digital calipers. The nib writes within a range of .67mm (medium) to 1.07mm (broad) stroke under medium pressure when measured with digital calipers. The nib was only dip-tested with Montblanc Black Ink. The nib writes ultra-smoothly when performing the writing sample in the listing images.

The beautiful briar wood case displays a finely inlaid cover that recalls the Taj Mahal cenotaphs. The box is in perfect condition with no damage to the briar wood case or ink staining of the inside material.

The Taj Mahal fountain pen by Visconti is a very unique writing instrument due to the non-typical handmade Silver wire overlay. The detail of craftsmanship that goes into making these is time-consuming. The result is a classic, yet very tasteful work of art. This example is in Mint condition with box and documentation.

*This was a $2400 retail pen based on the previous owner's records.

True to the Taj

The beauty of this fountain pen is only matched by the long and involved process of creating genuine wire filigree from melting drops of silver and then hand bending the wire to create intricate floral patterns and designs reminiscent of the Taj Mahal. An incredible work or art in incredible condition, with virtually no tarnish and complete with all packaging, papers, and even the original leather pen case which is rarely found in secondhand examples. Yet another fantastic find from Antique Digger!
