For your consideration, we are pleased to offer this rare 2010 Stipula Etruria "Legend of the Dragon & Phoenix" Maki-e Limited Edition Fountain Pen, crafted in resin and fitted with an 18K gold Medium nib. In Japanese mythology, the pairing of the dragon (Ryū) and the phoenix (Hō-ō) embodies the ideal harmony between opposing yet complementary forces. The dragon represents strength, power, and the dynamic energy of yang, while the phoenix symbolizes grace, beauty, and the gentle essence of yin. Together, they form a powerful emblem of balance, prosperity, and unity—signifying the perfect equilibrium between masculine and feminine energies, the eternal bond of love, and the harmonious coexistence of heaven and earth.
Created in 2010 by Allian Pens in collaboration with Japanese Maki-e master Katsunobu Nishihara, this pen features exquisite Urushi lacquer work with intricate Raden and shell inlays. Aptly named “Legend of the Dragon & Phoenix”, it was part of an ultra-limited series of just 10 pieces worldwide—this particular pen is number 2 of 10.
The cap is adorned with a sterling silver vermeil (gold plating over sterling silver) clip designed in the shape of a Samurai sword, engraved with the initials EMW for "East Meets West." The underside of the clip bears the sterling hallmark "925." The lower barrel is signed by Katsunobu Nishihara and hand-numbered "2/10," further reinforcing its uniqueness and collectible value. The section has the "EMW" initials engraved, which stand for "East Meets West".
This pen is free from any chips, cracks, or repairs, and remains in pristine condition. It measures 5 5/8" capped and 6 5/8" posted, and weighs approximately 1.06 ounces, offering a substantial yet balanced feel in the hand.
The pen uses either standard international ink cartridges or a Stipula-branded ink converter, which is included. The converter has been tested with water and functions smoothly.
Fitted with a Stipula 18K/750 gold nib in Medium, the nib measures approximately .82mm using digital calipers. As a true collector's item, the pen remains uninked to preserve its untouched condition for the next owner.
Included are the original Stipula inner and outer presentation boxes, product literature, and a Limited Edition Warranty card, all of which are in flawless condition.
This remarkable collaboration between Stipula (Italy), Allian Pens (USA), and Katsunobu Nishihara (Japan) brings together world-class craftsmanship in an exceptional piece of functional art. The Legend of the Draon and Phoenix is an extraordinarily rare fountain pen that would make a prestigious and unique addition to any fine writing collection—an opportunity few collectors will ever encounter!
