Description

For your consideration, we are offering for sale this 2016 Namiki Emperor Maki-e Ryu (Dragon) Fountain Pen fitted with an 18K Broad nib. This fountain pen has never been inked and comes in the original box with all the Namiki documentation, Artist Mamoru Wakabayashi card, Namiki Ink Bottle, and ink dropper. I consider this Namiki Emperor Fountain Pen to be in Mint, Never Inked Condition.

NOTE: Namiki's Emperor Ryu (or Dragon) Collection features elegant designs on a large ebonite body with #50 - 18k gold nibs - this nib is designated a Broad. The motifs are created through the highly advanced Togidashi-Taka Maki-e technique (Burnished-Raised Maki-e). First, Togidashi Maki-e (Burnished Maki-e) is used; the background and scenery are painted with lacquer, which is then sprinkled with gold powder and sealed with Urushi lacquer. After drying, the surface is lightly burnished with charcoal, revealing the design underneath. Then, the main design is further rendered through the additional use of materials like lacquer and charcoal powder.  (The Namiki website provides steps that go into this process here.)

This Namiki Emperor Dragon fountain pen features a dragon, a symbol associated with wealth, fertility, and success in some Asian cultures. The magic ball (cintamani) carried by the dragon allows its possessor to make their dreams come true. This masterpiece combines some of the most recognized techniques of Japanese masters. Taka maki-e is used to accentuate the presence of the dragon, while raden creates the sparkle of the dragon ball and other ornaments. Finally, togidashi maki-e is the technique that adorns the background.

The fountain pen features a wonderful 18K/750 nib tuned by the masters at Namiki, assuring long-lasting, impeccable writing performance. The date code on the side of the nib reads, "0615" - so a June 2015 timeframe. The nib iridium tipping measures at .99mm when measured with digital calipers - or a Broad nib point. I have never inked the pen as I wanted to keep the pen in Mint Condition. Namiki nibs are some of the best-made 18K Gold Nibs in the World.

This Namiki Emperor Fountain Pen measures 6 7/8" in length capped, 8 1/2" inches posted. The diameter of the cap is 19.75mm. The fountain pen weighs 1.73 ounces.

On the end of the barrel, the pen is marked with, "A510 Namiki and the Namiki Logo Japan".

The fountain pen comes in a nice softwood presentation box, and includes an unused Namiki bottle of ink, and ink dropper to get you started writing with this gorgeous work of art.

The process of hand-crafting these fountain pens takes three months or longer to complete. This technique, though painstaking, gives this fountain pen its deep lustrous sheen and has been used by Namiki craftsmen since the company's inception back in 1918.

The Namiki Emperor Dragon Fountain Pen example is an exquisite display of artisty and craftsmanship. I would consider this Namiki to grade in Mint, Never Inked Condition. This is a very special, high-cachet fountain pen that ready to write or just add it to your writing arsenal collection. These retail for $12,000 in today's market and Namiki doesn't allow discounting of the Emperor pens to their reseller.
