Description

For your consideration, we are offering for sale this Rare Circa 1917 Sheaffer Mottled Hard Rubber Self-Filling Fountain Pen. This fountain pen has been serviced with a new silicone sac and is now in wonderful writing condition.

I have replaced the old rubber sac with a new silicone sac in order to preserve the color. Hand polished 14K Gold Self-Filling NIB. I also cleaned, buffed, polished, and waxed the barrel, cap, and blind cap to bring back the vibrancy and to protect the hard rubber of the fountain pen. The red & black color of this pen is spectacular with gorgeous color.

This fountain pen section, feed, and barrel are in magnificent condition with no chips, cracks, teeth marks or repairs with the cap always securing tightly to the barrel. The cap has a crack in the cap that has not been repaired and can see this in image #8. The Nickel Plated Lever is in excellent condition with no wear. The barrel has a crisp and clearly stamped imprint that reads, "PATD. AUG. 25, 08. DEC. 19, 12 - OCT. 20, 14 SHEAFFER'S FOUNTAIN PEN "BIG 'S' center imprint, NOV. 24, 1914 FORT MADISON, IOWA". The butt-end of the barrel is stamped with "2A". There are no monograms or personalizations on the cap or barrel. This Sheaffer Mottled Self-Filling Fountain Pen measures 5 3/8" in length capped and 6 3/4" posted.

I have tested the lever filling mechanism with water and fills as it should.

This Sheaffer has a #2 Self-Filling 14K Nib. The actual writing portion, the iridium, of the 14K Sheaffer NIB has a fine point measuring roughly .55mm when measured with digital calipers. When creating a writing sample, the NIB writes with an extra fine to broad stroke/line that varies between .42mm to .98mm when measured with digital calipers. The writing sample was done with the actual pen in the images that are listed for sale. The writing sample was used by dipping the NIB in Parker Quink Blue Ink.

Any specks of white in the images are from the cotton that I used to clean the barrel and cap.

This is a very Rare Sheaffer Fountain Pen in Mottled Hard Rubber. This Sheaffer would grade in Near Mint Condition if the cap didn't have a crack and list for $1200+ - as it sits it is in fine condition. The coloring of the barrel and cap is stunning and immaculate and will be a prized place holder for the new owner in their collection. Having an example of a Mottled Sheaffer from this era of this type if significant as these do not come up for sale very often.
