Description

For your consideration, we are offering for sale this Restored Circa 1912 Waterman 442 Safety Fountain Pen in Black Hard Rubber with Sterling Silver Overlay. This fountain pen has been thoroughly taken apart, cleaned and put back together and now is in wonderful writing condition.

I have hand cleaned the NIB and feed. Hand cleaned the inside of the barrel, cap, spiral, rod connector, turning knob, and end unit with mineral oil. Replaced the old cork packing unit with a new fluorocarbon rubber o-ring. Hand polished the Sterling Cap and Barrel along with the Ideal 14K #2 Flexible NIB.

This fountain pen is made from black hard rubber with Sterling Silver Overlay in the Trefoil Vine pattern, which was in use on the Waterman pens from roughly 1907 to 1923. The hard rubber portion of the pen displays a black color but one can see slight oxidation on the barrel in the area that is under the cap. The butt end of barrel end has an extremely faint imprint that I can only read, "2 - which would read 442 but the 4s are worn away".

The threads on the cap and barrel are excellent with the cap always securing tightly. There are no monograms or personalizations on the barrel and there is a cartouche area that has been left untouched. There are no cracks, nicks or repairs to the hard rubber. The sterling overlay looks beautiful that display less than normal use wear and scratching - very clean pen. There are no leaks from the cap or the turning knob and tested with first for 48 hours. This Waterman 442 measures 4 5/8" in length capped and 5 3/4" posted with the nib extended.

The NIB is a 14K #2 Semi-Flexible Ideal Waterman NIB. When measuring the actual tip of the 14K Ideal NIB, it measured at a medium point of .72mm when measured with digital calipers. When writing the sample in the listing images, the NIB writes with a fine line measuring roughly .58mm with light pressure on horizontal strokes and flexes to a double broad stroke of approximately 1.68mm with a medium to firm pressure. The writing sample provided was done with the actual pen in the images that are listed for sale. The writing sample was used by dipping the NIB in Parker Quink Blue-Black Ink.

Any specks of white in the images are from the cotton that I used to clean the barrel and cap.

Sterling Silver Overlay Waterman Safety Fountain Pen are uncommon and a scarce pen to find. This 442 Safety is exceptionally clean and a real treasure for collectors. I would grade this Waterman 442 Sterling Silver Safety Fountain Pen is Very Fine to Excellent condition. A superb collector worthy writing instrument to add to your writing arsenal collection!
