Description

For your consideration, we are offering for sale this uncommon Restored Circa 1917 Waterman Model 12 1/2 V.P.S.F. (Vest Pocket Self Filler) Fountain Pen in Black Chased Hard Rubber. This fountain pen has been thoroughly taken apart, cleaned, put back together, and now is in wonderful writing condition.

Ultrasonically cleaned the NIB, feed, and section. Hand cleaned the inside of the barrel and cap with mineral oil. Cleaned and polished the outside of the cap and barrel. Hand polished the Nickel Plated Waterman Clip and Lever Assembly along with the Waterman 14K #4 NIB.

This fountain pen is made of black hard rubber with very good chasing. The cap has a bit crisper chasing than the barrel does. This model was in production from 1915 to circa 1917. The cap is a screw-on type and secures tightly to the barrel. The Nickel trim has all been polished to shine brightly. The hard rubber displays a minor bit of oxidation. The barrel is stamped, "PAT'D 1884 MAY 23, 1899 WATERMAN'S IDEAL GLOBE LOGO FOUNTAIN PEN N.Y. U.S.A. & AUG., 4, 1903". The butt end of the fountain pen has imprint model number "12 1/2 V.P.S.F.". There are no monograms or personalizations to either the cap or barrel. There are no cracks or repairs to the hard rubber. This Waterman measures 4 1/4" in length capped and 5 1/2" posted.

The lever and box assembly has been cleaned and oiled. I added a new sac to the pen. I have tested the filling mechanism with water and fills. The Globe and Ideal imprint on the lever displays no wear and is clean and crisp.

This Waterman has a fantastic #2 WATERMAN New York 14K Nib that is a Fully Flexible writer. The iridium tipping is in excellent condition with the point measuring .52mm when measured with digital calipers - a fine nib point. When writing the sample in the listing images, the NIB writes with an extra-fine to triple broad line measuring roughly .41mm with light pressure to 2.19mm with medium to firm pressure when measured with digital calipers. The writing sample provided was done with the actual pen in the images that are listed for sale. The writing sample was used by dipping the NIB in Montblanc Blue Ink.

These V.P.S.F. Waterman Fountain Pens are extremely difficult to find since they were produced from 1915 to 1917. I would consider the condition of this fountain pen to easily grade in Very Fine condition. An uncommon example with great color, excellent chasing, clean imprints, and flexible nib that would be a fabulous addition to one's writing instrument stable.
