Description

For your consideration, we are offering for sale this Gorgeous Restored Circa 1923 Waterman #552 Black Hard Rubber with 14K Solid Gold "Filigree" Overlay Fountain Pen. This fountain pen has been thoroughly taken apart, cleaned and put back together and now is in wonderful writing condition. This is a Near Pristine Example of a Waterman #552 - an extremely clean example!

Ultrasonically cleaned the NIB, feed, and section. Hand cleaned the inside of the barrel and cap with mineral oil. Cleaned, buffed, and polished the outside of the cap and barrel. Replaced the old rubber sac with a new silicone sac. Hand polished the 14K Solid Gold Waterman Clip-Cap Clip, 14K Cap, 14K Barrel and 14K Lever Box Assembly along with the Waterman 14K #2 NIB.

This fountain pen is made from black hard rubber with 14K Solid Gold (not plated) Overlay which the pattern is known as Art Nouveau or "Trefoil Vine" pattern. This pattern was in production from 1907 to C1923. The design is stunningly gorgeous displaying a pink hue in the 14K gold material. The lever is crisp and clean with "IDEAL" on the lever easily seen with the naked eye. The Waterman Ideal Clip-Cap displays display absolutely no wear. All 14K Solid Gold trim has been polished to shine brightly. This Waterman 552 barrel has the crisp and clean imprint at the barrel end that reads, "WATERMAN'S REG U.S. PAT. OFF. MADE IN USA". The butt end of the fountain pen has a clean number "552" imprint. The threads on the cap and barrel are excellent with the cap always securing tightly to the barrel. There is a monogram on the barrel that reads, "O.F.D.". There are no cracks or repairs to the hard rubber or 14K gold filigree - this filigree overlay and hard rubber are in exceptional condition. This Waterman #552 measures 5 1/4" in length capped and 6 1/2" posted.

The lever and box assembly has been cleaned and oiled. I have tested the lever filling systems with water and works flawlessly and as it was originally intended to.

This Waterman has a smooth #2 WATERMAN IDEAL Flex Nib that is a pleasure to write with. The iridium tipping is in excellent condition with the point measuring .84mm when measured with digital calipers - a medium nib point. When writing the sample in the listing images, the NIB writes with a fine line measuring roughly .46mm on the horizontal strokes and 2.26mm on the vertical strokes with medium to firm pressure when measured with digital calipers. The writing sample provided was done with the actual pen in the images that are listed for sale. The writing sample was used by dipping the NIB in Parker Quink Blue Ink.

Any specks of white in the images are from the cotton that I used to clean the barrel and cap.

This antique Waterman #552 14K Solid Gold Filigree Fountain Pen is not an easy example to find clean. I would consider the condition of this fountain pen to grade in Excellent+ to Near Mint condition - hard to find any challenge with this Waterman. This is a Collector and Writer's dream pen in terms of condition and how smooth it writes. This Waterman #552 Fountain Pen is in ready to write condition or add it to your writing arsenal collection.
