Description

For your consideration we are offering for sale this Fantastic Restored Circa 1939 Art Deco Waterman Model #5116 Golden Pearl Celluloid with Black pinstripes Fountain Pen. This fountain pen has been thoroughly taken apart, cleaned, put back together, and now is in wonderful writing condition. The 5116 Waterman Model is an uncommon writing instrument and the celluloid is extremely clean.

I have ultrasonically cleaned the nib, feed, and section. Hand-cleaned the inside of the barrel and cap. Cleaned and polished the outside of the cap and barrel. Replaced the old rubber sac with a new, properly sized, rubber sac. Hand polished the 18K Gold Filled 3 Ring Cap Banding, Gold Filled Waterman Clip, Gold Filled Lever Box Assembly along with the Waterman 14K NIB.

This fountain pen is made from celluloid in golden pearl color with pinstripes and a clear, albeit ambered, ink-view window. The coloring is fantastic and vibrant and has been polished to a fabulous shine. The barrel has an imprint at the center of the barrel that reads, "WATERMAN'S REG. U.S. IDEAL GLOBE LOGO PAT. OFF. MADE IN THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA". The ends of the fountain pen cap and barrel have a stepped design which is an unusual feature for Waterman during this time period. The threads on the cap and barrel are excellent with the cap always securing tightly to the barrel. There is a monogram on the barrel under the imprint that reads, "C H BROWN". There are no cracks, nicks, or repairs to the celluloid. This Waterman 5116 measures 5 1/8" in length capped and 6 3/8" posted. The lever is crisp and clean with no wear. The Waterman Ideal Clip displays a touch of wear at the very top portion of the clip. The gold-filled cap banding does not display any brassing.

The lever and box assembly has been cleaned and oiled. I have tested the lever filling systems with water and work flawlessly as is was originally intended to.

This Waterman has a 14K IDEA Nib. This Nib writes extremely smoothly but rigidly. The iridium tipping is in excellent condition with the point measuring .72mm when measured with digital calipers. When writing the sample in the listing images, the NIB writes with a fine line with very light pressure measuring roughly .52mm and has some flex upwards to a medium stroke of .83mm with firm pressure when measured with digital calipers. The writing sample provided was done with the actual pen in the images that are listed for sale. The writing sample was used by dipping the NIB in Parker Quink Blue Ink.

This vintage Waterman #5116 Fountain Pen is an uncommon model that is not often available. The celluloid is extremely clean and the pen is in ready-to-write condition. I would consider the condition of this fountain to be excellent. These later Waterman numbered models are increasingly difficult to acquire, especially in this condition.
