Description

For your consideration, we are offering for sale this Restored Circa 1925 Waterman 452 Black Hard Rubber Fountain Pen with Sterling Silver Basketweave Overlay fitted with a 14K flexible nib. This fountain pen has been thoroughly taken apart, cleaned, put back together, and is now in fabulous writing condition.

I have ultrasonically cleaned the nib, feed, and section. I hand-cleaned the inside of the barrel and cap with mineral oil. The old rubber sac was replaced with a new rubber sac. The sterling silver cap and barrel have been hand-polished along with the clip and Ideal lever box assembly.

This fountain pen is made from black hard rubber with a Sterling Silver Overlay. The sterling silver overlay is known as a basketweave or bamboo pattern by collectors. The hard rubber portion of the pen displays a deep, classy black color. The cap and barrel sterling overlay is stamped with, "WATERMAN'S STERLING MADE IN U.S.A.". The end of the barrel has the imprint, "WATERMAN'S RED. U.S. PAT. OFF. MADE IN U.S.A.". The butt end of the fountain pen has a nearly non-existent 452 imprint - in the right lighting and magnification, one can make out a portion of the 4 and 2.

The threads on the cap and barrel are excellent with the cap always securing tightly. There are no monograms or personalizations on the barrel and there is a cartouche area that has been left untouched. There are no cracks, nicks, or repairs to the hard rubber. The sterling overlay looks beautiful and displays less than normal use wear and scratching. This Waterman 452 measures 5 3/8" in length capped and 6 5/8" posted.

The lever and box assembly have been cleaned and oiled. I have tested the filling mechanism with water and fills as it originally did back in the mid-1920s. The Globe and Ideal imprints on the lever are clean and easily seen, not worn.

The NIB is a 14K #2 Flexible Waterman nib type, when measuring the actual tip of the 14K Ideal NIB, it measured at a medium point of .84mm when measured with digital calipers. When writing the sample in the listing images, the NIB writes with a fine line measuring roughly .47mm with very light pressure and flexes up to a double/triple broad stroke of approximately 1.75mm with a medium to firm pressure. The writing sample provided was done with the actual pen in the images that are listed for sale. The writing sample was used by dipping the nib in Parker Blue Ink. I have to also mention that the nib writes with an extremely smooth line, it is an exceptionally smooth writer!

These Waterman's 452 Fountain Pen with Sterling Overlay are getting extremely difficult to source in this condition. This one is in ready-to-write condition using this incredibly flexible NIB. I would grade this Waterman 452 in Very Fine+ to Excellent Condition and is a collector-grade Waterman. A superb writing instrument to add to your writing arsenal collection!
