Description

For your consideration, we are offering for sale this Restored Rare Circa 1924 Waterman 552V LEC 18 Carat Solid Gold Night & Day Overlay Fountain Pen. This fountain pen has been thoroughly taken apart, cleaned, put back together and now is in wonderful writing condition.

I have ultrasonically cleaned the NIB and feed. Hand cleaned the inside of the barrel, cap, and section with mineral oil. Replaced the old rubber sac with a new silicone sac. Hand polished the 18 Carat Solid Gold Overlay, Ideal Lever Box Assembly, and Waterman Ideal 18K #2 NIB. The 18 Carat Solid Gold Overlay is a wonderful condition with no damage. There is some very light scratching that I would consider below normal wear for the age of the pen. This fountain pen is made from black hard rubber with the solid 18-carat gold overlay that is commonly referred to as the "NIGHT & DAY" pattern. The cap and barrel overlay is stamped with French hallmarks and Waterman's OR 18C (see photos). The black hard rubber under the overlay displays very little oxidation and displays a lovely black color. The threads on the cap and barrel are excellent with the cap always securing tightly. The fountain pen cap does not display a pocket clip and there is no indication that it ever came with one. There is a monogram in the cartouche area of the barrel that reads "HD". This Waterman 552V LEC measures 4 3/8" in length capped and 5 5/8" posted.

This Waterman 552V LEC is an 18K #2 Ideal Nib with a Jules Fagard stamp on the backside heel of the Nib (see photo). I want to emphasize that the Nib on this Waterman is a flexible "buttery smooth" type - it is a joy to write with and I cannot emphasize this enough! The tip/point of the Nib/iridium has a medium point measuring .64mm when measured with digital calipers. The Nib flexes from a medium (.64mm) line to a triple broad (1.97mm) stroke/line when measured with digital calipers under medium pressure. The writing sample in the images was produced from the actual pen that is listed for sale by dipping the Nib in Parker Blue Quink Ink.

The barrel ends bear to no numbers but this is a 552V sized pen and the LEC means, "Lower End Covered" in terms of the overlay. There is no denting of any kind, just an overlay very clean pen.

Any specks of white in the images are from the cotton that I used to clean the barrel and cap.

This Waterman is a very rare writing instrument in French Hallmarked Solid 18 Carat Gold Overlay with smooth writing Jules Fagard hallmarked 18K Nib. This Waterman 552V LEC 18 Carat Solid Gold Overlay Fountain Pen would easily grade in excellent condition. This Waterman is ready to write with or just add it to your writing arsenal collection.
