Description

For your consideration we are offering for sale this Restored 1920s Waterman 454 Hard Rubber Fountain Pen with Sterling Silver Hand Engraved Vine Overlay. This fountain pen has been thoroughly taken apart, cleaned and put back together and now is in wonderful writing condition.

Ultrasonically cleaned the NIB, feed, and section. Hand cleaned the inside of the barrel and cap with mineral oil. Replaced the old rubber sac with a new, properly sized, #16 silicone sac. Hand polished the Sterling Waterman Ideal Cap & Clip, Barrel and Ideal Lever Box Assembly along with the Waterman Ideal Accountant Keyhole NIB.

This fountain pen is made from black hard rubber with Sterling Silver Overlay. The sterling silver overlay is known as a hand engraved vine pattern. The hard rubber portion of the pen displays a deep, classy black color. The barrel end has a weak imprint that reads, "WATERMAN'S REG U.S. PAT. OFF. MADE IN USA". The butt end of the fountain pen has a crisp 454 imprint.

The threads on the cap and barrel are excellent with the cap always securing tightly. There is a monogram on the barrel where the cartouche is with the initials, "HEM". There are no cracks, nicks or repairs to the hard rubber. The sterling overlay is fabulous, with some light scratching that commensurates with the age of the pen. This Waterman 454 measures 5 3/8" in length capped and 6 5/8" posted. The lever and box assembly has been cleaned and oiled. It works flawlessly and smoothly. The Globe and Ideal imprint on the lever is crisp and clean.

The NIB is a 14K Waterman Ideal Accountant NIB. When measuring the actual tip of the 14K Ideal NIB, it measures at .48mm with digital calipers. When writing the sample in the listing images, the NIB writes with a double extra fine/extra fine line measuring roughly .35mm with normal pressure. The writing sample provided was done with the actual pen in the images that is listed for sale. I have tested the filling mechanism with water and fills wonderfully. The writing sample was used by dipping the NIB in Parker Quink Blue-Black Ink.

Any specks of white in the images are from the cotton that I used to clean the barrel and cap.

This is an exceptional, antique Waterman 454 Fountain Pen that is in ready to write condition. I would grade this Waterman 454 in excellent condition and certain is a collector grade fountain pen. A superb writing instrument to add to your writing arsenal collection!
