Description

For your consideration, we are offering for sale this Restored Circa 1927 Waterman 58 Wood Grain Hard Rubber Fountain Pen with Gold Filled Trim fitted with a proper 14K #8 Waterman fully flexible nib. This fountain pen has been thoroughly taken apart, cleaned, put back together, and now is in great writing condition.

I have ultrasonically cleaned the NIB, feed, and section. I have hand-cleaned the inside of the barrel and cap with mineral oil. I replaced the old rubber sac with a new rubber sac. The gold-filled Ideal Clip-Cap Clip, Gold-Filled Cap Banding, and Ideal Lever Box assembly have all been hand-polished to shine brightly once again. This fountain pen is made from hard rubber in a wood grain design. The color is fantastic, very vibrant, and even throughout the cap and barrel. Among collectors, the wood grain pattern is considered harder to acquire than the "red ripple" pattern and commands a premium.

The barrel has imprints at the center, end of the barrel, and on the butt-end. The center barrel imprint reads, "WATERMAN'S REG U.S. IDEAL GLOBE LOGO PAT. OFF FOUNTAIN PEN". The end of the barrel imprint reads, "WATERMAN'S REG U.S. PAT. OFF MADE IN U.S.A.". The butt-end of the barrel has a somewhat worn "58" model number imprint.

The threads on the cap and barrel are excellent with the cap always securing tightly. There are no monograms or personalizations on the cap or barrel. There are no cracks, nicks, or repairs to the hard rubber. The 18K gold-filled clip displays minor wear. The cap banding, on the lower edging displays a hint of wear. The lever box assembly shows just a touch of wear on the forward area edging of the lever box, NOT on the arm or the "globe".

The lever and box assembly have been cleaned and oiled. I have tested the filling mechanism with water and fills wonderfully. It works as it was designed to - it sucks up water without an issue in my testing.

This Waterman has the "Monster" #8 - 14K NIB. The NIB has an excellent writing experience along with great flexibility. When measuring the actual tip of the 14K #8 Ideal NIB, it measured at .58mm with digital calipers or a fine point. When writing the sample in the listing images, the NIB writes with a fine line measuring roughly .57mm with very light pressure and flexes up to a triple broad stroke 2.06mm with medium to firm pressure, I didn't want to overextend the NIB's capabilities. The writing sample was done with the actual pen in the images listed for sale. The writing sample was used by dipping the NIB in Montblanc Blue Ink.

This Waterman's 58 Wood Grain Fountain Pen is in "ready to write" condition using the great flexible NIB. I would consider the condition of this fountain in Very Fine to Excellent condition. This is a highly sought-after Waterman pen and is considered a grail fountain pen for Waterman collectors. These come up infrequently in this type of condition. Certainly, this is a spectacular writing instrument to add to any writing arsenal collection that often is the cornerstone of one's collection!
