Description

For your consideration, we are offering for sale this Spectacular Late 1800s (Circa 1895) H.M. Smith Gold Filled Diamond Overlay Pattern Straight Cap Fountain Pen. This fountain pen has been thoroughly taken apart, cleaned, and put back together and now is in wonderful writing condition. This Smith is going to rival some of the best examples ever seen.

H.M. Smith was known to be a selling agent for Paul Wirt pens. Smith's contribution to Wirt's business was his sale of several Wirt pens to Mark Twain, who visited Smith's store in 1886.

I have hand cleaned the NIB, feed, and section. Hand cleaned the inside of the barrel and cap with mineral oil. Cleaned and polished the outside of the cap and barrel along with the 14K H.M. Smith No. 2 Nib.

This fountain pen is made from black hard rubber with Gold Filled Diamond Pattern Overlay which is absolutely incredible and in Excellent condition. All the Gold-filled overlay has been polished to shine brightly. The Straight Cap and Barrel are excellent with the cap always securing tightly to the barrel. There are no monograms or personalizations on the cap or barrel. There are no cracks or repairs to the hard rubber or the gold-filled overlay - this Diamond pattern and hard rubber is in excellent+ condition with much less to normal wear and usage. This Smith measures 5 1/8" in length capped and 6 1/8" posted. When posting the cap on the end of the barrel, it is loose, and wouldn't recommend posting it on the barrel.

This Smith Straight Cap Fountain Pen is an Eyedropper Fill type. I have tested the lever filling system with water and work as it was originally intended to.

The H.M. Smith & Co Fountain Pen has a No. 2 H.M. Smith Nib. The iridium tipping is in good condition with the point measuring .56mm when measured with digital calipers - a fine nib point. When writing the sample in the listing images, the NIB writes with a double extra fine to broad stroke/line. The double extra-fine line measures roughly .33mm and will flex to a broad stroke/line of 1.00mm with medium to firm pressure when measured with digital calipers. The writing sample provided was done with the actual pen in the images that are listed for sale. The writing sample was used by dipping the NIB in Parker Quink Blue Ink.

This H.M. Smith Straight Cap Fountain Pen with Diamond Pattern is in impeccable condition for the age. I would consider the condition of this fountain pen to grade in Very Fine to Excellent condition. If you are a collector of these types of Straight Cap Overlay Fountain Pens then I would care to guess you will be very pleased with this one in terms of condition. A fabulous addition to one's writing arsenal collection.
