Description

For your consideration, we are offering for sale this Spectacular Circa 1908 Paul E. Wirt Mottled Red Hard Rubber Taper Cap Model 40 Fountain Pen. This fountain pen has been thoroughly taken apart, cleaned, and put back together and now is in wonderful writing condition. This Wirt condition is going to rival some of the best examples ever seen.

Hand cleaned the NIB, feed, and section. Hand cleaned the inside of the barrel and cap with mineral oil. Cleaned and polished the outside of the cap and barrel along with the 14K Wirt Nib.

This fountain pen is made from mottled red hard rubber which is absolutely incredible and in Excellent condition. The Wirt Taper Cap displays absolutely no wear and the barrel is super clean as well with a clean imprint that reads, "PAUL E. WIRT FOUNTAIN PEN BLOOMSBURG, PA U.S.A. PAT'D APRIL 7, 1903".The butt end of the barrel displays the model number 40. The Taper Cap and barrel are excellent with the cap always securing tightly to the barrel. There are no monograms or personalizations on the cap or barrel. There are no cracks or repairs to the hard rubber and the hard rubber is in excellent+ condition with much less to normal wear and usage. This Wirt measures 5 7/8" in length capped and 7 1/4" posted.

This Wirt Taper Cap Fountain Pen is an Eyedropper Fill type. I have tested the filling system with water and work as it was originally intended to.

The Paul E. Wirt Fountain Pen has a smooth Wirt Nib that is a proper style nib for this pen. The iridium tipping is in excellent condition with the point measuring .90mm when measured with digital calipers - a broad nib point. When writing the sample in the listing images, the NIB writes with an extra-fine to double broad stroke/line. The extra-fine line measures roughly .35mm on the horizontal strokes and will flex to a double broad stroke/line of 1.70mm with medium to firm pressure when measured with digital calipers. There is a tiny fissure at the base of the nib that stops at the "K" in "14K" - it does not affect the writing of the nib. The writing sample provided was done with the actual pen in the images that are listed for sale. The writing sample was used by dipping the NIB in Parker Quink Blue Ink.

Any specks of white in the images are from the cotton that I used to clean the barrel and cap.

This Wirt Taper Cap Fountain Pen is in impeccable condition. I would consider the condition of this hard rubber fountain pen to grade in Excellent to Near Mint condition. If you are a collector of these types of Taper Cap Overlay Fountain Pen then I would care to guess you will be very pleased with this one in terms of condition. This is a great example to add to one's writing arsenal collection.
