Description

For your consideration, we are offering for sale this Restored Circa 1920s Waterman 42 Safety Fountain Pen in Italian 18Kr Rolled Gold Engine Turned (Guilloche) Vine & Leaf Overlay. This fountain pen has been thoroughly taken apart, cleaned, and put back together and now is in wonderful writing condition.

I have hand cleaned the NIB and feed. I also hand-cleaned the inside of the barrel, cap, spiral, rod connector, turning knob, and end unit with mineral oil. This fountain pen has excellent suction after adding a fluorocarbon rubber o-ring. I have hand polished the clip, cap, and barrel along with the Ideal 14K #2 wet noodle flex nib.

This fountain pen is made from black hard rubber with an 18Kr Rolled gold Italian overlay Guilloche engine-turned "Vine & Leaf" panel pattern. The hard rubber portion of the pen displays a deep black color with no oxidation. The cap banding is stamped with, "WATERMAN'S 18KR with the IDEAL Globe Imprint". The butt end of the barrel end has a great imprint that reads, "42". The 18KR Rolled Gold overlay is in great condition displaying no only very minor gold fill loss on the ball of the clip. There is also a very tiny pin needlepoint ding on top of the cap.

The threads on the cap and barrel are excellent with the cap always securing tightly. There are no monograms or personalization to either the cap or barrel. There are no cracks, nicks, or repairs to the hard rubber. The 18Kr rolled gold overlay looks beautiful that displays less than normal use wear and scratching - a very clean pen. There are no leaks from the cap or the turning knob - the barrel holds ink in this pen perfectly. This Waterman 42 measures 4 7/8" in length capped and 6 1/8" posted with the nib extended.

Here is where this safety pen starts to really become fantastic. The nib comes with a 14K #2 Flexible "wet-noodle type" Ideal Waterman NIB. When measuring the actual tipping (iridium) of the 14K Ideal NIB, it measured at a fine point of .53mm when measured with digital calipers. When writing the sample in the listing images, the NIB writes with a fine line measuring roughly .45mm with light pressure on horizontal strokes and flexes to a triple broad stroke of approximately 2.20mm with medium pressure. The writing sample provided was done with the actual pen in the images that are listed for sale. This nib is a great, smooth writer! The writing sample was used by dipping the NIB in Parker Quink Blue Ink.

Waterman Italian Overlay Safety Fountain Pens from the 1920s are such spectacular examples to hold and write in today's modern age. This 42 Safety is a real treasure for collectors. I would grade this Waterman 42 Safety Fountain Pen in Very Fine condition. A superb collector-worthy writing instrument to add to your writing arsenal collection!
