Description

For your consideration, we are offering for sale this very scarce restored Circa 1938 Sheaffer Oversize Balance Fountain Pen in the Gray Pearl celluloid fitted with a 14K nib in magnificent condition. This fountain pen has been thoroughly taken apart, cleaned, put back together, and is now in great writing condition. 

I have ultrasonically cleaned the NIB, feed, and section. Replaced the rubber sac with a new sac. Hand-polished the nickel-plated clip, cap banding, and 14K gold 2-tone nib. I also cleaned, buffed, and polished the barrel and cap to bring back the vibrancy and protect the celluloid of the fountain pen. The trim on this oversized balance is bright white and the celluloid is super clean.

This fountain pen cap and barrel are in excellent condition with no cracks, chips, or repairs with the cap always securing tightly to the barrel. The cap has a White Dot with a nickel plate clip and cap banding. The trim on this Sheaffer OS Balance is in great condition with no wear and is polished to shine brightly once again - so hard to find trim like this on these pens. The barrel is stamped with, "W.A. SHEAFFER PEN CO FORT MADISON, IOWA U.S.A. PAT-D 78,795". There are no monograms or personalizations on either the cap or barrel. This Oversized Sheaffer Balance Fountain Pen measures 5 1/2" in length capped and 6 1/4" posted. 

I have tested the lever-filling mechanism with water and fills as it should.

The Sheaffer has a 14K Gold Lifetime with the actual iridium point measuring at .48mm, or a fine point, when measured with digital calipers. When writing a sample with this NIB, it writes with an extra-fine to fine line variation. In the writing sample provided, the extra fine line measures at .41mm and will vary to fine stroke that measures at .52mm with medium to firm pressure when measuring with digital calipers. The nib does not have any real flex and is a rigid writer but is a great writing nib. The writing sample was done with the actual pen in the images listed for sale. The writing sample was used by dipping the NIB in Parker Blue Ink. 

This is one of those vintage Sheaffer Oversize Fountain Pens you don't always get a chance to secure in your collection in this type of condition and that is why the price is where it is. This rare oversized Sheaffer Balance Fountain Pen in the Gray Pearl celluloid would grade in Excellent+ to Near Mint Condition - these just do not come up for sale very often. Certainly, this fountain pen is collector grade and this fine writing instrument is ready to write with or just add to your writing arsenal collection.
