For your consideration, we are pleased to offer for sale this highly collectible 1987 Pilot Capless / Vanishing Point Fountain Pen in the desirable Black Faceted finish, accented with brushed silver-colored trim and fitted with a 14K yellow gold Fine nib. This example remains in Mint, New Old Stock condition, has never been inked, and comes complete with its original presentation boxes.
This is one of the earlier faceted Pilot Vanishing Point models, a configuration that has become increasingly desirable among collectors for its distinctive angular design, exceptional build quality, and relative scarcity compared to later smooth-bodied examples. Most faceted Vanishing Points encountered today are fitted with the later “Namiki” clip imprint; however, this example predates many of those transitional models, featuring the earlier and far less commonly seen “PILOT” imprint on the clip. The sharply defined faceted black body creates beautiful visual depth while also offering a more secure and comfortable grip in hand, giving the pen both aesthetic appeal and outstanding functionality.
The pen presents beautifully throughout with no chips, cracks, dents, dings, repairs, or wear. The brushed silver-colored trim remains clean and crisp, complementing the understated elegance of the black faceted finish. The clip is sharply stamped “PILOT,” while the barrel carries the “JAPAN” imprint, further reinforcing its early production heritage.
One of the defining innovations of the Vanishing Point series is its retractable nib mechanism, and this example functions flawlessly. The click-activated system engages and retracts the nib smoothly and reliably, offering the convenience of a ballpoint-style operation combined with the writing experience of a true gold-nib fountain pen.
The fountain pen measures approximately 5 3/8" inches in length with the nib retracted, maintaining the sleek, pocket-friendly proportions that helped make the Vanishing Point one of the most innovative writing instruments ever produced. Filling is accomplished via Pilot/Namiki cartridges or converter, and this pen includes a new CON-40 converter for bottled ink use.
The pen retains its original 14K solid yellow gold Fine nib, which remains in pristine, untouched condition, having never been inked. The nib carries the date code “887,” indicating production in August 1987, making this a very early Pilot-branded example and considerably more desirable to serious Vanishing Point collectors. Measured with digital calipers, the iridium tipping measures approximately 0.58mm, placing it firmly within the true fine writing range.
Early faceted Pilot Vanishing Points are widely regarded as some of the most collectible modern fountain pens produced by Pilot, combining innovative engineering with exceptional Japanese craftsmanship. Examples in never inked Mint condition, especially early Pilot-branded models complete with boxes, are becoming increasingly difficult to locate.
Whether destined for an advanced Vanishing Point collection or appreciated as a premium daily writer, this is an outstanding and increasingly scarce example worthy of serious consideration.
