Description

For your consideration, we are offering for sale this Extremely Rare Restored Circa 1936 Sheaffer Oversize Balance Fountain Pen in the Ebonized Pearl celluloid. This fountain pen has been thoroughly taken apart, cleaned, put back together, and is now back in fantastic writing condition.

Collector Alert: This is a Non-White Dot Sheaffer which makes the fountain pen a scarce example that is not often available. The Sheaffer Ebonite Pearl Balance began production in 1936 until 1941 and based on the clip we can date this model around 1936 to 1937.

I have ultrasonically cleaned the nib, feed, and section. I have replaced the old rubber sac with a new sac. I hand-polished the gold-filled Sheaffer clip, cap banding, and the 14K gold nib. I also cleaned, buffed, and polished the barrel and cap to bring back the vibrancy and to protect the celluloid of the fountain pen.

This fountain pen cap and barrel are in exquisite condition with no chips, cracks, teeth marks, or repairs with the cap always securing tightly to the barrel. The cap has a gold-filled clip and cap banding - the clip displays very minor wear towards the top of the clip, the edging of the flat ball clip, and the cap banding has minor wear on the right and left hand sides. The barrel is clearly stamped with, "W.A. Sheaffer Pen Co Fort Madison, Iowa, U.S.A. PAT. D-78,795". There are no monograms or personalizations on the cap or barrel. This Oversized Sheaffer Balance Fountain Pen measures 5 5/8" in length capped and 6 3/8" posted.

I have tested the lever-filling mechanism with water and fills as it should with the new sac.

This Sheaffer has the proper Sheaffer "non-Lifetime" 14K NIB. The actual writing portion, the iridium, of the 14K Sheaffer NIB has a medium point measuring roughly .82mm when measured with digital calipers. When creating a writing sample, the NIB writes with a fine to medium/broad stroke/line that varies between .54mm to .92mm when measured with digital calipers. The writing sample was done with the actual pen in the images that are listed for sale. The writing sample was used by dipping the NIB in Parker Quink Blue Ink. This nib writes considerably well but is more rigid than flexible.

This is a very Rare Oversize Sheaffer Balance Fountain Pen because it is a Non-White Dot model on an Oversize example. Certainly acquiring this scarce Non-White Dot Oversize example will be a prize for the new owner. I would grade the color and condition of this pen to be in Excellent+ Condition - the trim has some very minor wear areas which would grade overall in very fine to excellent condition. This is one of those examples that, if you are a Sheaffer Balance collector, you may never get a chance to acquire one again. This is my first time seeing one in 12 years.
