Description

For your consideration, we are offering for sale this Restored Circa 1915 Waterman 412 Hard Rubber Fountain Pen with Trefoil Vine Sterling Silver Overlay. This fountain pen has been thoroughly taken apart, cleaned, and put back together and now is in wonderful writing condition.

Ultrasonically cleaned the NIB, feed, and section. Hand cleaned the inside of the barrel and cap with mineral oil. Replaced the old rubber sac with a new, properly sized, sac. Hand polished the Sterling Waterman Ideal Cap & Clip, Barrel, and Ideal Lever Box Assembly along with the Ideal 14K #2 Flexible NIB.

This Waterman 412 is known as the Trefoil Vine pattern that was in use from 1907 to Circa 1923 during the Art Nouveau period. This Waterman is made from black hard rubber with Sterling Silver Overlay marked "Sterling" on he cap and barrel. The barrel end has a weak imprint that only reads, "WATERMAN'S". The butt end of the fountain pen barrel has a non-existent imprint due to wear - it would have the 412 PSF imprint if there was no wear. The threads on the cap and barrel are excellent with the cap always securing tightly. There are no monograms or personalizations on the barrel cartouche area. There are no cracks, nicks or repairs to the hard rubber barrel. The sterling overlay looks beautiful, with some scratching that commensurates with the age of the pen. This Waterman 412 measures 5 3/8" in length capped and 6 5/8" posted.

The lever and box assembly has been cleaned and oiled. It works flawlessly and smoothly. The Globe and Ideal imprint on the lever is clean. I have tested the filling mechanism with water and fills wonderfully.

The NIB is a 14K #2 Waterman Flexible New York NIB. This NIB is very responsive and writes very smooth with flexibility - it is a real pleasure to write with. When measuring the actual tip of the 14K Ideal NIB, it measured at .65mm with digital calipers. When writing the sample in the listing images, the NIB writes with an medium line measuring roughly .61mm with very light pressure and flexes up to a triple broad stroke of approximately 1.93mm with medium to firm pressure when measuring with digital calipers. The writing sample provided was done with the actual pen in the images that are listed for sale. The writing sample was used by dipping the NIB in Parker Quink Blue Ink.

Any specks of white in the images are from the cotton that I used to clean the barrel and cap.

This is a wonderful antique Waterman's 412 Fountain Pen that has a super flex nib and is in ready to write condition. I would grade this Waterman 412 in very fine to excellent condition. A superb writing instrument to add to your writing arsenal collection!
