Description

For your consideration, we are offering for sale this Gorgeous Restored Circa 1925 Waterman #0552 1/2V Ringtop Fountain Pen in the 18K Gold Filled Basketweave Overlay. This fountain pen has been thoroughly taken apart, cleaned, and put back together and now is in wonderful writing condition.

Ultrasonically cleaned the NIB, feed, and section. Hand cleaned the inside of the barrel and cap with mineral oil. Cleaned, buffed, and polished the outside of the cap and barrel. Replaced the old rubber sac with a new silicone sac. Hand polished the 18K Gold Filled Waterman Cap, Barrel, and Lever Box Assembly along with the Waterman 14K #2 NIB.

This fountain pen is made from black hard rubber with a smooth 18K Gold Filled Overlay. The overlay is gorgeous is super clean and polished to shine again with no wearing of the gold-filled material with no denting - very tough to find this type of overlay without any dings, dents, or wear. The lever is crisp and clean with "IDEAL" on the lever easily seen with the naked eye. The cap and barrel are stamped, "WATERMAN'S". This Waterman 0552 1/2V barrel has the lower end covered with the overlay. The butt end of the fountain pen has a clean stamping of the number "0552 1/2V" stamp. The threads on the cap and barrel are excellent with the cap always securing tightly to the barrel. There are no monograms or personalizations to either the cap or barrel. There are no cracks or repairs to the hard rubber or Gold FIlled overlay. This Waterman #0552 1/2V measures 3 7/8" in length capped and 5 1/8" posted.

Despite the "basketweave" terminology, these later Filigrees seem to be a simplified version of a rather short-lived pattern that is shown on the ½V-size eyedroppers and lever-fillers in Waterman's 1919 catalog, in which the intersections of six strips with the round central emboss are quite clearly rendered as connected six-petaled flowers. This is not the standard trefoil or basketweave pattern that we all know - this is the first one I have ever found and quite uncommon.

The lever and box assembly has been cleaned and oiled. I have tested the lever filling systems with water and works flawlessly and as it was originally intended to.

This is where the pen starts to really shine - this Waterman has a #2 WATERMAN IDEAL Flex Nib. The iridium tipping is in excellent condition with the point measuring .73mm when measured with digital calipers - a medium nib point. When writing the sample in the listing images, the NIB writes with a fine line measuring roughly .57mm with light pressure and flexes to a triple broad stroke of 2.00mm with medium to firm pressure when measured with digital calipers. The writing sample provided was done with the actual pen in the images that are listed for sale. The writing sample was used by dipping the NIB in Parker Quink Blue Ink.

Any specks of white in the images are from the cotton that I used to clean the barrel and cap.

This antique Waterman #0552 1/2V Fountain Pen is not an easy example to find clean. The overlay is gorgeous and displays extremely well. I would consider the condition of this fountain pen to grade in Excellent condition. A fabulous Waterman example to add to one's writing arsenal collection.
