Description

For your consideration, we are offering for sale this extremely scarce Restored Circa 1930s Waterman's 494 Fountain Pen with Smooth Sterling Silver Overlay. This fountain pen has been thoroughly taken apart, cleaned, put back together, and now is in wonderful writing condition.

The 494 Streamline Fountain Pen is incredibly scarce. These rarely come up for sale. This is the first one I have ever owned in 15 years of collecting!

Ultrasonically cleaned the NIB and feed. I hand cleaned the inside of the barrel and cap with mineral oil. I also cleaned, buffed, and polished the outside of the cap and barrel to bring back the vibrancy of the sterling silver. Replaced the old rubber sac with a new, silicone sac. I have hand polished the Sterling clip and Lever Box Assembly along with the Waterman New York Ideal 14K #4 NIB.

This fountain pen is made from black hard rubber with a Smooth Sterling Silver Overlay. This Waterman was manufactured between circa 1930 and 1939. The Sterling Silver overlay is gorgeous displaying a beautiful clean overlay with no denting. There are some very light scratching and point it out for clarity sake. The Cap is a screw-on type that secures tightly to the barrel. All Sterling Silver overlay has been polished to shine brightly. The cap is stamped, "WATERMAN'S STERLING". The butt end of the fountain pen imprint is, "494". There are no monograms or personalization to either the cap or the barrel. There are no cracks or repairs to the hard rubber or sterling silver. This Waterman 494 measures 5 1/8" in length capped and 6 5/8" posted.

The lever and box assembly have been cleaned and oiled. It works flawlessly and smoothly when I tested it with water

This is the fun part - this Waterman 14K New York nib has some great flexibility. When measuring the actual tip of the 14K Ideal New York #4 NIB, it measures at .62mm with digital calipers or a medium point. When writing the sample in the listing images, the NIB writes with a medium line measuring roughly .73mm with very light pressure and flexes up to a triple broad+ line of 2.42mm with medium to firm pressure. The writing sample provided was done with the actual pen in the images that are listed for sale. The writing sample was used by dipping the NIB in Parker Quink Blue Ink.

This vintage Waterman's 494 Fountain Pen is in ready-to-write condition using the incredibly flexible NIB. I would consider the condition of this fountain in excellent condition and certainly fun to write with. An excellent addition to your writing arsenal collection and an extremely rare model that one really rarely gets a chance to own.
