Description

For your consideration, we are offering for sale this Extremely Rare and Uncommon Restored Circa 1915 Waterman #414 Sleeve Filler Black Hard Rubber with Sterling Silver Trefoil Overlay Fountain Pen. This fountain pen has been thoroughly taken apart, cleaned, put back together ,and now is in wonderful writing condition. Such an uncommon fountain pen that is extremely difficult to find.

Ultrasonically cleaned the NIB, feed, and section. Hand cleaned the inside of the barrel and cap with mineral oil. Cleaned, buffed, and polished the outside of the cap and barrel. Hand polished the Sterling Silver Cap, Sterling Barrel and Waterman 14K #4 NIB. The hard rubber has a great black color with very minor oxidation.

This fountain pen is made from black hard rubber with Sterling Silver Overlay in what is known as the Art Nouveau or Trefoil pattern. This pattern was in production from 1907 to circa 1923 but the Sleeve Filler Fountain Pens were produced from circa 1910 to 1915. The Sterling Silver overlay is gorgeous displaying a beautiful Art Nouveau look. All Sterling Silver overlay has been polished to shine brightly. The Sleeve portion of the barrel is stamped, "WATERMAN'S IDEAL FOUNTAIN PEN STERLING". The butt end of the fountain pen has a nearly worn imprint model number "414 S.F." The cap is a slip type cap with the cap always securing tightly to the barrel. There are no monograms or personalizations to either the cap or barrel. There are no cracks or repairs to the hard rubber or Sterling Silver overlay. This Waterman #414 Sleeve Filler measures 5 3/8" in length capped and 6 3/4" posted.

This Waterman Fountain Pen is a Sleeve Fill type - the barrel sleeve slides towards the end of the barrel to reveal the pressure bar that one pushes down/release to take in the ink. Slide the Sleeve forward to close the pressure bar. The filling system has been restored and is in proper working condition.

This Waterman has a great writing 14K #4 WATERMAN IDEAL Flex Nib. The Waterman Nib is a later #4 nib dating to the late 1920s most likely. The iridium tipping is in excellent condition with the point measuring .75mm when measured with digital calipers - a medium nib point. When writing the sample in the listing images, the NIB writes with a medium to triple broad line. The medium line measuring roughly .65mm with light pressure and flexes to a triple broad stroke of 1.92mm with medium to firm pressure when measured with digital calipers. This Ideal Nib writes great with a very responsive flexible nib - it is a pleasure to write with. The writing sample provided was done with the actual pen in the images that are listed for sale. The writing sample was used by dipping the NIB in Montblanc Blue Ink.

These large Waterman Fountain Pens overlays are extremely difficult to find especially in Sterling. This #414 Sleeve Filler Sterling Art Nouveau/Trefoil Pattern Overlay Fountain Pen is a difficult example to find and considered very rare. I would consider the condition of this fountain pen to grade in Very Fine condition. Such a significant Waterman example that one can add to their writing instrument arsenal that very few people can say they own.
