Ultrasonically cleaned the NIB, feed, and section. Hand cleaned the inside of the barrel and cap with mineral oil. Replaced the old rubber sac with a new, properly sized, #16 silicone sac. Hand polished the Sterling Waterman Ideal Cap & Clip, Barrel and Ideal Lever Box Assembly along with the Ideal New York 14K #2 NIB.
This fountain pen is made from black hard rubber with Sterling Silver Overlay. The sterling silver overlay is known as a basket weave pattern. The barrel end has a great imprint that reads, "WATERMAN'S REG U.S. PAT. OFF. MADE IN USA". The butt end of the fountain pen has the 452 imprint.
The threads on the cap and barrel are excellent with the cap always securing tightly. There are no monograms or personalizations on the barrel and there is a cartouche area that has been left untouched. There are no cracks, nicks or repairs to the hard rubber barrel. The cap, however, does a stress crack as seen in image eight and is contained in the area photographed, which is roughly 4.78mm. The sterling overlay looks beautiful, with some light scratching that commensurates with the age of the pen. This Waterman 452 measures 5 3/8" in length capped and 6 5/8" posted. The lever and box assembly has been cleaned and oiled. It works flawlessly and smoothly. The Globe and Ideal imprint on the lever are clean.
The NIB is a 14K #2 Waterman Ideal Flexible NIB. This NIB writes smooth and is wonderful to write with. When measuring the actual tip of the 14K Ideal NIB, it measured at .68mm with digital calipers. When writing the sample in the listing images, the NIB writes with a double extra fine line measuring roughly .25mm with very light pressure and flexes up to double broad stroke of approximately 1.58mm with medium to firm pressure, I didn't want to overextend the NIB's capabilities. The writing sample provided was done with the actual pen in the images that are listed for sale. I have tested the filling mechanism with water and fills wonderfully. The writing sample was used by dipping the NIB in Parker Quink Blue-Black Ink.
Any specks of white in the images are from the cotton that I used to clean the barrel and cap.
This is a wonderful antique Waterman's 452 Fountain Pen that is in ready to write condition. I would grade this Waterman 452 in fine condition. A superb writing instrument to add to your writing arsenal collection!
