Ultrasonically cleaned the NIB, feed, and section. Hand cleaned the inside of the barrel and cap with mineral oil - the inside of the cap is very clean. I have cleaned, buffed, and polished the outside of the cap and barrel. Replaced the old rubber sac with a new sac. Hand polished the 18K Gold Filled Cap Banding, Gold Filled Waterman Clip, Gold Filled Lever Box Assembly along with the Waterman 14K #2 NIB.
This fountain pen is made from hard rubber in the Red & Black Wood Grain pattern. The coloring is gorgeous displaying deep red and black coloring. The lever box assembly is crisp and clean with "IDEAL" on the lever easily seen with the naked eye. The Waterman Ideal Clip has been polished to shine brightly but the IDEAL WATERMAN stamping does show wear. The gold-filled cap banding is very good with just ever so tiny bit of wearing along the top edging, again polished to a bright shine. All 18K Gold Filled trim has been polished to shine brightly. This Waterman 52 barrel has a clean imprint at the center of the barrel that reads, "WATERMAN'S REG. U.S. IDEAL GLOBE LOGO PAT. OFF. FOUNTAIN PEN". The butt end of the fountain pen has a crisp number "52" imprint. The threads on the cap and barrel are excellent with the cap always securing tightly to the barrel. There are no monograms or personalization to either the cap or barrel. There are no cracks or repairs to the hard rubber. This Waterman #52 measures 5 3/8" in length capped and 6 5/8" posted.
The lever and box assembly has been cleaned and oiled. I have tested the lever filling systems with water and works flawlessly and as it was originally intended to.
This Waterman has a WATERMAN IDEAL #2 Flexible Nib. The iridium tipping is in excellent condition with the point measuring .76mm when measured with digital calipers - a medium nib point. When writing the sample in the listing images, the NIB writes with a Medium to Triple Broad stroke/line variation. The medium line measures roughly .60mm with light pressure and the triple broad strokes measure at 1.87mm with a firm to medium pressure when measured with digital calipers. The nib writes very smoothly, a great writer. The writing sample provided was done with the actual pen in the images that are listed for sale. The writing sample was used by dipping the NIB in Parker Quink Blue-Black Ink.
This antique Waterman #52 Wood Grain Hard Rubber Fountain Pen has a wonderful writing nib that collectors will enjoy. I would consider the condition, color, trim, and nib of this fountain pen to grade in Fine to Very Fine condition. This Waterman #52 Fountain Pen is in ready to write condition or add it to your writing arsenal.
