For your consideration, we are pleased to offer for sale this beautifully restored circa 1953 Sheaffer Sentinel Snorkel Fountain Pen in the highly desirable Fiesta Red finish, fitted with a conical 14K two-tone Medium nib. Professionally restored to full operating condition, this exceptional example represents one of the more sought-after color variations in Sheaffer's legendary Snorkel series.
Introduced in 1952, the Sheaffer Snorkel is widely regarded as one of the most innovative fountain pens ever produced. Its ingenious filling system allows the pen to draw ink through a slender extending tube, keeping the nib clean during filling while showcasing Sheaffer's engineering brilliance. Among the various colors offered, Fiesta Red remains one of the most desirable and collectible, prized for its vibrant appearance and relatively limited production.
The cap and barrel remain in outstanding condition with no chips, cracks, teeth marks, or repairs. The brilliant Fiesta Red resin retains excellent color and gloss, beautifully complemented by the polished silver and gold-filled cap banding and clip. There is no brassing or plating wear, and the cap threads secures to the barrel with a precise fit. The cap is correctly stamped "SHEAFFER Made in U.S.A.", while the barrel carries the "W.A. SHEAFFER PEN CO. FORT MADISON, IOWA U.S.A. MADE IN U.S.A." imprint. There are no monograms or personal engravings.
The pen measures approximately 5 1/2 inches capped, 6 1/2 inches posted, weighs .65 ounces, and offers the balanced proportions and comfortable feel that have made the Snorkel one of Sheaffer's most celebrated writing instruments.
This fountain pen has been completely disassembled and professionally restored. The nib, feed, section, and Snorkel tube were ultrasonically cleaned, while the cap, barrel, blind cap, and 14K nib were carefully hand polished to preserve their original appearance. A new silicone ink sac, point seal, and O-ring have been installed using high-quality reproduction components, and the Touchdown mechanism has been cleaned, lubricated with pure silicone grease (Trident), and adjusted to ensure smooth, reliable operation. The filling system has been tested with water and functions exactly as Sheaffer intended.
The original 14K two-tone conical Medium nib remains in excellent condition. The tipping measures approximately 0.72mm when checked with digital calipers and produces a smooth Fine-to-Medium writing line ranging from approximately 0.48mm to 0.65mm under normal writing pressure. The writing sample shown was created using the actual pen offered here after dipping the nib in Parker Quink Blue-Black Ink.
Collectors have long admired the Sentinel Snorkel for combining Sheaffer's revolutionary filling technology with elegant styling and exceptional reliability. Restored examples in Fiesta Red are becoming increasingly difficult to locate, particularly those retaining such strong color, excellent trim, and original factory components.
Whether acquired as a dependable daily writer or as an important addition to a Sheaffer collection, this circa 1953 Sheaffer Sentinel Snorkel offers the ideal combination of historic innovation, outstanding craftsmanship, and professional restoration.
Overall, we would confidently grade this Sheaffer Sentinel Snorkel as Excellent+ to Near Mint- condition—a beautifully restored, collector-quality example of one of Sheaffer's most iconic fountain pens.
