The Visconti Mudéjar Art of Aragon Fountain Pen, which was introduced in 2006, pays tribute to one of Spain’s most distinctive and historically significant artistic traditions. Between 1000 and 1600 A.D., Mudéjar art flourished in the region of Aragon as a fusion of Romanesque, Gothic, and Renaissance styles deeply influenced by Arabic aesthetics. It emerged during a remarkable era of coexistence, when Christians, Muslims, and Jews lived side by side, each contributing to the cultural and artistic fabric of the time. Christian monarchs commissioned buildings, Jewish financiers supported their construction, and Muslim artisans gave life to the designs. The result was a body of architecture and ornamentation that symbolized community, cooperation, and shared purpose—a legacy that continues to stand as a true World Heritage.
Visconti’s Mudéjar Art of Aragon pen reflects this spirit of harmony through its artistry and craftsmanship. The body is crafted from warm ivory-colored resin and decorated using the ancient technique of scrimshaw. This process involves engraving fine patterns into the resin with an exceptionally sharp tool, creating grooves that are then filled with copperplate printing ink. The ink is allowed to dry for several days before the surface is polished to reveal the intricate design. Traditionally, scrimshaw was employed to embellish ivory walking sticks, knife handles, and rifle stocks; Visconti remains the only pen manufacturer in the world to adapt this painstaking method to fine writing instruments.
The engravings on this edition recall the arches, geometric motifs, and symbolic designs found on Mudéjar monuments across Aragon. Each detail transforms the pen into a work of art that embodies both the decorative richness and cultural significance of the tradition it honors.
This limited edition was produced in only 600 pieces worldwide. This is Limited Edition number 403. The pen features Visconti’s patented Double Reservoir Power Filler (High Vacuum Power Filler) system for dependable ink capacity and a striking two-tone 18k nib. This example is fitted with a Fine nib. It is housed in a burlwood presentation box, which is in excellent condition.
This Visconti is free from cracks, chips, or repairs, with the cap threading smoothly and securely onto the barrel. The pen measures 5 7/8" capped, 7 3/8" posted, with a diameter of 16.09mm at the cap lip/band area, and weighs 1.76 ounces — offering both presence and balance in the hand. The limited edition number, 403 of 600, is engraved on the barrel end, affirming its exclusivity.
At the fountain pen's heart lies Visconti’s two-tone 18K Fine nib, measuring .54mm at the tip (via digital calipers). The nib remains pristine, never inked, ensuring the next owner inherits it in untouched condition.
The filling system is Visconti’s patented Double Reservoir Power Filler, tested with water and operating flawlessly. This mechanism offers generous ink capacity while safeguarding against leakage — a hallmark of Visconti’s technical innovation.
Accompanying this fine writing instrument is its original Visconti presentation set: the lacquered burlwood display case, the Visconti warranty card, and a bottle of ink.
