The pen is in perfect condition with it never being used. The cap and barrel have an extremely detailed Sterling Silver overlay that is in perfect condition with no cracks, nicks, scratches, dings, dents, or repairs. The cap is always securing tightly to the barrel. In the section, when the barrel is unscrewed, one will see the "Montegrappa" company name on the silver ring. The lower portion of the cap, opposite side of the clip, and barrel are stamped with "ITALY and 925". The bottom of the barrel is marked with the limited edition number 064/399. This fountain pen measures 6" inches capped and 7 3/8" inches posted. The pen weighs a whopping 4.82 ounces, it is one of the heaviest pens I ever held.
The fountain pen uses a piston filling system. I have tested the piston filler with water and it works as it is designed. The pen has never seen ink.
The 18K Gold nib is designated "MEDIUM" and displays the "Pirate design as seen on top of the presentation box, 18K, MONTEGRAPPA hallmarks" on the nib. The iridium tipping measures .81mm when measuring with digital calipers, which falls into the range of Medium the nib is designated. This fountain pen has never been inked and wanted to leave it that way for the next collector.
This fountain pen comes in the original Montegrappa Pirate factory wooden box which has a sterling Pirate medallion in perfect condition. Also, the Montegrappa Limited Edition Literature/Documentation booklet comes with a pen.
