Hand cleaned the NIB and feed. Hand cleaned the inside of the barrel, cap, and section with mineral oil. Cleaned the outside of the cap and barrel with mineral oil and the hard rubber displays a nice mottled color (red & black) with vibrant coloring.
This fountain pen is made from mottled (red and black) hard rubber - this is more of a "flame" color with more red/orange coloring. This is an Eyedropper Fountain Pen and that means you would unscrew the section to add the ink via an eyedropper and the cap is a slip type cap always securing to the barrel. The barrel has a nearly clear imprint at the center that read, "WATERMAN'S IDEAL GLOBE LOGO FOUNTAIN PEN N.Y. PAT'D MAY 23, 1899 & AUG 4, 1903 U.S.A.". The butt end of the fountain pen has the #12 imprint. There are no monograms to either the cap or barrel. This Waterman #12 measures 5 3/8" in length capped and 6 3/4" posted.
The Waterman IDEAL New York NIB is a #2 Nib with awesome flexibility. The actual tip of the Waterman 14K NIB measures .67mm with digital calipers. When writing the sample in the listing images, the NIB writes with an extra-fine line measuring .40mm on the horizontal strokes and will flex to a quadruple broad stroke at 2.63mm with medium to firm pressure when being measured with digital calipers. This nib writes extremely smoothly! The writing sample provided was done with the actual pen in the images that are listed for sale. The writing sample was used by dipping the NIB in Parker Quink Blue Ink.
This Flame Mottled Hard Rubber Waterman #12 is a tough model to acquire in this color and condition. This Waterman is extremely clean and would consider it collector worthy. I would consider this Waterman #12 to easily grade in Excellent Condition. It is ready to write or just add to your writing arsenal collection
