Ultrasonically cleaned the NIB, feed, and section. Hand cleaned the inside of the barrel and cap with mineral oil. Cleaned, buffed, and polished the outside of the cap and barrel. Replaced the old rubber sac with a new sac. Hand polished the Sterling Silver Waterman Cap, Barrel, and Lever Box Assembly along with the Waterman 14K #2 NIB, and the pencil.
This fountain pen and pencil are made from black hard rubber with Sterling Silver Overlay in what is known as the Gothic pattern. The overlay is gorgeous is super clean and polished to shine again with no dings or denting - very tough to find this type of overlay without any dings, dents, or wear. The lever is crisp and clean with "IDEAL" on the lever easily seen with the naked eye. The pencil, fountain pen cap and barrel are stamped, "WATERMAN'S STERLING MADE IN U.S.A.". This Waterman 452 1/2V barrel has the lower end covered with the overlay. The butt end of the fountain pen has a clean stamping of the number "452 1/2V" stamp. The threads on the cap and barrel are excellent with the cap always securing tightly to the barrel. There are no monograms to the Fountain Pen or Pencil. There are no cracks or repairs to the hard rubber or Sterling overlay. This Waterman #452 1/2V measures 3 7/8" in length capped and 5 1/8" posted.
The lever and box assembly has been cleaned and greased to operate smoothly. I have tested the lever filling systems with water and works as it was originally intended to.
This is where the pen starts to really shine - this Waterman has a #2 WATERMAN IDEAL Flex Nib. The iridium tipping is in excellent condition with the point measuring .88mm when measured with digital calipers - a medium nib point. When writing the sample in the listing images, the NIB writes with an extra-fine line measuring roughly .36mm with light pressure and flexes to a triple broad stroke of 1.92mm with medium to firm pressure when measured with digital calipers. The writing sample provided was done with the actual pen in the images that are listed for sale. The writing sample was used by dipping the NIB in Parker Quink Blue Ink.
The Pencil will repel lead by turning the nose cone. The pencil writes and functions. The ring top at the top of the pencil will unscrew for a place to store lead.
This antique Waterman #452 1/2V Fountain Pen and Pencil set is in pristine condition with much less use than others I have seen and sold. The overlay is gorgeous and displays extremely well. I would consider the condition of this fountain pen to grade in Excellent+ to Near Mint condition. A fabulous Waterman example to add to one's writing arsenal collection.
