Ultrasonically cleaned the NIB, feed, and section. Hand cleaned the inside of the barrel and cap with mineral oil - the inside of the cap is very clean. I have cleaned, buffed, and polished the outside of the cap and barrel. Replaced the old rubber sac with a new sac. Hand polished the 18K Gold Filled Cap Banding, Gold Filled Waterman Clip-Cap Clip, Gold Filled Lever Box Assembly along with the Waterman 14K #2 NIB.
This fountain pen is made from hard rubber in the Cardinal Red color with no cracks which are almost impossible to find. The coloring is good but is displaying light staining which this color is known for. The lever displays a clean "IDEAL" imprint on the lever easily seen with the naked eye but there is some wear on the arm. The Waterman Ideal Clip-Cap Clip displays display absolutely no wear. The gold-filled cap banding is excellent with just a hint of wear on the top edge of the banding and that is only in a couple of spots - very minor wear. All 18K Gold Filled trim has been polished to shine brightly.
This Waterman 52 barrel has a light imprint at the center of the barrel that reads, "WATERMAN'S REG U.S. IDEAL GLOBE PAT. OFF. FOUNTAIN PEN". The butt end of the fountain pen has a crisp number "52" imprint. The threads on the cap and barrel are excellent with the cap always securing tightly to the barrel. There are no monograms or personalization to either the cap or barrel. There are no cracks or repairs to the hard rubber. This Waterman #52 measures 5 3/8" in length capped and 6 5/8" posted.
The lever and box assembly has been cleaned and oiled. I have tested the lever filling systems with water and works flawlessly and as it was originally intended to.
This Waterman has a fantastic flexible #2 WATERMAN IDEAL Nib that is a pleasure to write with. The iridium tipping is in excellent condition with the point measuring .70mm when measured with digital calipers - a medium nib point. When writing the sample in the listing images, the NIB writes with a fine to triple broad stroke/line variation. The fine line measures roughly .50mm with light pressure and the triple broad strokes measures at 2.07mm with medium to firm pressure when measured with digital calipers. The writing sample provided was done with the actual pen in the images that are listed for sale. The writing sample was used by dipping the NIB in Parker Quink Blue Ink.
Any specks of white in the images are from the cotton that I used to clean the barrel and cap.
This antique Waterman #52 Cardinal Red Hard Rubber Fountain Pen is not an easy example to find. I would consider the condition of this fountain pen to grade in Fine to Very Fine condition - the cap and barrel has some staining and if it did not have this it would be in Excellent+ condition. This Waterman #52 Cardinal Fountain Pen is in ready to write condition or add it to your writing arsenal collection.
