Ultrasonically cleaned the NIB, feed, and section. Hand cleaned the inside of the barrel and cap with mineral oil - the inside of the cap is very clean. I have cleaned, buffed, and polished the outside of the cap and barrel. Replaced the old rubber sac with a new sac. Hand polished the Nickel Plated Waterman Clip, Nickel Plated Lever Box Assembly along with the Waterman 14K NIB.
This fountain pen is made from hard rubber in the Red Ripple pattern. The coloring is gorgeous displaying deep red and black coloring. The lever box assembly is crisp and clean with "IDEAL" on the lever easily seen with the naked eye with no wear. The Waterman Ideal Clip displays no wear of the nickel and has been polished to shine brightly. All Nickel trim has been polished to shine brightly. This Waterman 51V barrel has a clean and crisp imprint at the center of the barrel that reads, "WATERMAN'S REG. U.S. IDEAL GLOBE LOGO PAT. OFF. FOUNTAIN PEN RIPPLE". The butt end of the fountain pen has a crisp number "51V" imprint. The threads on the cap and barrel are excellent with the cap always securing tightly to the barrel. There are no monograms or personalization to either the cap or barrel. There are no cracks or repairs to the hard rubber. This Waterman #51V measures 4 1/4" in length capped and 5 3/8" posted.
The lever and box assembly has been cleaned and oiled. I have tested the lever filling systems with water and works flawlessly and as it was originally intended to.
This Waterman has a WATERMAN #1 - 14K Flex Nib. The iridium tipping is in excellent condition with the point measuring .77mm when measured with digital calipers - a medium nib point. When writing the sample in the listing images, the NIB writes with an Extra Fine to Double Broad stroke/line variation. The extra-fine line measures roughly .38mm with light pressure on the horizontal strokes and the double broad strokes measure at 1.74mm with normal to medium pressure when measured with digital calipers. The writing sample provided was done with the actual pen in the images that are listed for sale. The writing sample was used by dipping the NIB in Parker Quink Blue-Black Ink.
This antique Waterman #51V Red Ripple Hard Rubber Fountain Pen is very desirable as it is a very uncommon, scarce model to acquire - I have handled well over 400+ Waterman Red Ripple Fountain Pens and this is my first 51V. I would consider the condition, color, trim and nib of this fountain pen to grade in Excellect+ to Near Mint condition. It will be hard to beat the condition of this pen and is a pristine example for one's collection. This Waterman #51V Fountain Pen is in ready to write condition or add it to your writing arsenal.
