Description

For your consideration, we are offering for sale this Spectacular Late 1800s H.M. Smith 14K Gold Huge #9 Nib and the nib holder in Black Chased Hard Rubber.

H.M. Smith was known to be a selling agent for Paul Wirt pens. Smith's contribution to Wirt's business was his sale of several Wirt pens to Mark Twain, who visited Smith's store in 1886.

I have hand-cleaned the NIB. I have also hand-cleaned the inside of the barrel and cap with mineral oil. Cleaned and polished the outside of the cap and barrel along with the 14K H.M. Smith No. 9 Nib.

This fountain pen holder is made from chased black hard rubber with a Chevron pattern. The pen holder is not marked, just the nib. The Straight Cap and Barrel are excellent with the cap always securing tightly to the barrel. There are no monograms or personalizations on the cap or barrel. There are no cracks or repairs to the hard rubber pen holder. The pen holder when closed measures 4" and when posted it measures 5 3/8" in length without the nib inserted.

This combination of nib and pen holder is considered a dip pen.

I rarely see #9 size nibs and this one is quite uncommon. I included a Waterman #6 nib for size comparison, (which is not included in this listing) which is also a considerable large nib - just wanted to provide a reference of size. The H.M. Smith & Co is a #9 size Nib and stamped into it. The iridium tipping is in good condition with the point measuring .44mm when measured with digital calipers - an extra fine to fine nib point. When writing the sample in the listing images, the NIB writes with a double extra fine to triple broad stroke/line. The double extra-fine line measures roughly .24mm and will flex to a triple broad stroke/line of 1.83mm with medium to firm pressure when measured with digital calipers. At the very base of the nib there is a small fissure that can be seen that measures many 3 millimeters. It can be welded by a nib repair person such as Greg Minuskin. The writing sample provided was done with the actual pen in the images that are listed for sale. The writing sample was used by dipping the NIB in Montblanc Blue Ink.

If you are a collector of large nibs then I would care to guess you will be very pleased with this one. The unusual pen hold in chased hard rubber is also very interesting feature that came with this nib. A fabulous addition to one's writing arsenal collection.
