For your consideration, we are delighted to offer this exceptional circa 1965 Parker 61 Custom Fountain Pen in Charcoal Grey, fitted with its original 14K gold Medium nib and accompanied by its original chalk marking, original Parker box, shipping box, and literature. Preserved in genuinely remarkable Mint, New Old Stock, Never Inked condition, this is an especially desirable example of the English-made Parker 61 Custom and one that should appeal strongly to the collector who values originality, condition, and completeness. Parker’s English production of the 61 Custom began in the 1962 through 1968, and the Custom represented one of the more upscale configurations, distinguished by its attractive 1/10 12K rolled gold cap.
The Charcoal Grey barrel is exceptionally well preserved, retaining its original factory color, surface, and finish with virtually no evidence of age or handling. Most importantly, the lower end of the barrel retains its original chalk marking, “61 CUSTOM.” This marking is an unusually nice survivor and provides an important glimpse of the pen as it would have appeared during production and distribution. For the Parker collector, details such as this are particularly satisfying because they speak to the pen's originality rather than simply its cosmetic condition. The barrel remains completely free of chips, cracks, fissures, teeth marks, dents, scratches, repairs, monograms, engravings, or other personalization.
The 1/10 12K rolled gold cap is equally impressive. Its distinctive vertically lined engraving remains exceptionally clean and bright, with the gold surface showing none of the brassing, wear, or abuse so frequently encountered on vintage Parker 61s. The original gold arrow clip and trim remain properly fitted and beautifully preserved. The lower cap lip carries the appropriate Parker markings, including “Parker,” the Parker logo, the 1/10 12K RG Coat of Arms hallmark, and “Made in England.” The cap is clean, straight, and secure, completing an exceptionally well-preserved example of this particularly attractive Parker 61 configuration.
The Parker 61 measures approximately 5 3/8 inches capped and 5 3/4 inches posted, with an approximate weight of .68 ounces. Its slender, streamlined proportions are quintessential Parker 61, reflecting the sophisticated mid-century design that distinguished the model from the more conventional filling systems of its era. The Parker 61 was particularly innovative in its use of the capillary filling system, allowing the pen to draw ink through capillary action rather than relying upon a conventional lever, button, or piston mechanism. The capillary system remained a defining feature of the 61 until Parker transitioned the model to cartridge/converter filling in 1969.
The pen retains its original 14K gold Medium nib, measuring approximately .84mm at the tipping with digital calipers. I have deliberately not written with this nib, as preserving the pen in its original Never Inked condition is considerably more important here than producing a writing sample. The nib remains clean, untouched, and free from the evidence of ordinary use, making it particularly appropriate for the collector who appreciates a vintage Parker in essentially untouched condition.
Equally compelling is the original capillary filling system. This system has never been inked, and one of the most persuasive physical indications of that condition can be seen at the end of the capillary filler, which retains its original red appearance with no visible evidence of ink exposure. The distinctive end material found on these fillers can provide an especially useful clue when evaluating a Parker 61 represented as Never Inked. In combination with the exceptionally clean barrel, untouched nib, immaculate cap, and surviving chalk marking, it adds another important piece of evidence supporting the pen's remarkable originality.
While Charcoal Grey itself was a regular Parker 61 color, examples are considerably more compelling when they retain their original factory appearance after approximately six decades. Finding an early English Parker 61 Custom with its original Charcoal Grey finish, exceptionally clean 1/10 12K rolled gold cap, surviving “61 CUSTOM” chalk marking, untouched nib, unused capillary filler, and original packaging represents a considerably more difficult proposition than simply finding another vintage Parker 61. It is the combination of these characteristics that makes this particular example special.
The original Parker box, shipping box, and accompanying literature further enhance the presentation. Surviving packaging is always desirable to the serious Parker collector, but finding it together with a pen that has remained this remarkably untouched is particularly satisfying. The overall presentation gives the impression of an example that spent the better part of its life preserved rather than used, and the condition of the pen today remains remarkably close to that in which it would have left the Parker factory.
There is something particularly appealing about an untouched early Parker 61 Custom. The Charcoal Grey barrel, gold-filled cap, streamlined mid-century styling, 14K gold nib, innovative capillary filling system, surviving factory chalk marking, and original packaging come together to create much more than simply a vintage writing instrument. This is a beautifully preserved example of Parker's mid-century design philosophy and one of the company's most technologically distinctive fountain pens.
We consider this circa 1965 Parker 61 Custom to be in Mint, New Old Stock, Never Inked condition. For the Parker collector who places a premium on originality, preservation, and completeness, this is an exceptionally desirable example. Parker 61s can certainly be found, but examples that retain this level of untouched originality—and especially the original “61 CUSTOM” chalk marking, unused capillary system, and original presentation materials—are considerably more difficult to find.
